Some years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the historic district of Puerto Cabello, a port city located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, in the central part of Venezuela.
That day, I took my mother to the international airport of Valencia, since she had to board a plane to travel abroad, and at that time, the airport of Barquisimeto had no international air connections.
The car ride was a couple of hours, and after saying goodbye, I started my way back, however, as it was still quite early and the weather was good, I decided to detour a few kilometers to visit Puerto Cabello, a city I had not been back to in many years.
Algunos años atrás, tuve la oportunidad de visitar el casco colonial de Puerto Cabello, una ciudad portuaria ubicada a orillas del Mar Caribe, en la parte central de Venezuela.
Ese día, llevé a mi madre al aeropuerto internacional de Valencia, ya que debía abordar un avión para viajar al exterior, y en aquel momento, el aeropuerto de Barquisimeto no tenía conexiones aéreas internacionales.
El viaje en carro fué de un par de horas, y luego de despedirnos, emprendí el retorno, sin embargo, como era bastante temprano todavía y había buen tiempo, decidí desviarme unos pocos kilómetros para visitar a Puerto Cabello, una ciudad a la que no había vuelto en muchos años.
Puerto Cabello has the largest and most important seaport in the country, ahead of La Guaira on the Central Coast, and in colonial times served for the transport of goods with the rest of the Latin American countries, the Spanish-speaking Antilles and Spain itself, so it was attacked and looted countless times by British, Dutch and French pirates during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the notorious pirate and English vice-admiral, Francis Drake.
On that visit, which I made on a Sunday morning, the city was practically alone, so I was able to park my car and walk around it without many obstacles, and although its old colonial structures were in a good state of preservation, I could not help but notice some lack of maintenance, probably as a result of the prolonged crisis that still affects the country today.
Although I have not been back since then, I have read that the local authorities have recently made a great investment in the recovery of the historic center and in the construction of new attractions, which has allowed this city to become a very attractive tourist destination for national and foreign visitors, in addition to the presence of beautiful beaches nearby.
Puerto Cabello posee el mayor puerto marítimo más importante del país, por delante del de La Guaira en el Litoral Central, y en la época colonial sirvió para el transporte de mercancías con el resto de los países latino americanos, las antillas hispanohablantes y la propia España, por lo que fue atacado y saqueado en innumerables ocasiones por piratas británicos, neerlandeses y franceses durante los Siglos XVI y XVII, incluyendo al conocido pirata y vicealmirante inglés, Francis Drake.
En aquella visita que realicé un Domingo en la mañana, la ciudad estaba prácticamente sola, por lo que pude estacionar mi carro y recorrerla a pié sin muchos obstáculos, y aunque sus antiguas estructuras coloniales se encontraban en buen estado de conservación, no pude dejar de observar algo de falta de mantenimiento, probablemente como consecuencia de la prolongada crisis que aún al día de hoy, afecta al país.
Aunque no he vuelto desde entonces, he leído que las autoridades locales en los últimos tiempos, han realizado una gran inversión en la recuperación del casco histórico y en la construcción de nuevas obras, lo que le ha permitido a esta ciudad convertirse en un destino turístico muy atractivo para los visitantes nacionales y extranjeros, aunado a la presencia de hermosas playas en sus cercanías.
