Orange is a color that holds a special place in my heart. I stand in solidarity with the movement to end violence against women and children.

In my profession, I have encountered many women and children whose stories of abuse and violence are deeply heartbreaking. Their experiences serve as a powerful reminder of the challenges they face.

The Stories of Survivors

Case 1. A young teacher, married for ten years, has endured a tumultuous relationship marked by emotional abuse, including insults, threats, and controlling behavior. She revealed that her husband has been struggling with drug addiction for several years, which has significantly impacted their lives. His substance abuse has not only created financial strain for the family but has also resulted in frequent arguments and instances of violence.

Case 2. Four young girls, aged 7, 9, 12, and 14, have tragically suffered unimaginable abuse at the hands of their father, who has not only raped them but has also impregnated the eldest daughter. This horrific situation is further compounded by their mother’s heartbreaking decision to refrain from reporting the rapist to the authorities. She fears that if her husband is incarcerated, there will be no one to provide for the family, leaving them vulnerable and without support.

Case 3. An elderly woman has endured a challenging marriage for over 20 years to a husband whose struggles with alcoholism have created a volatile and dangerous environment. Despite her unwavering patience and commitment, the consequences of his drinking have not only affected their family but have also traumatized their neighbors, particularly those with children, who are often exposed to his violent outbursts during drunken episodes. The situation reached a critical turning point when her husband threatened to kill their eldest son after the boy bravely stood up to him, resisting his father’s drunken behavior. This alarming incident prompted the woman to recognize that she could no longer tolerate the escalating danger and chaos in their home.

The painful cycle of abuse and the tough choices that survivors must make to protect themselves and their families. The challenges faced by these women illustrate the broader societal issues surrounding domestic violence, including a lack of resources and support for those in crisis. It is vital to address these systemic problems so that victims can seek justice without the fear of losing their homes or facing additional hardships.

These are just a few of the heartbreaking cases I have encountered, and my heart aches for each of these survivors. Many abused women find themselves trapped in a cycle of fear and uncertainty, often unsure of where to turn for help or feeling too intimidated to reach out for support.

This pervasive sense of helplessness can leave them feeling isolated and alone in their struggles. I have made it my mission to assist these courageous individuals in whatever small ways I can. Whether it’s providing a listening ear, helping them access resources, or connecting them with local support services, I strive to empower them to reclaim their lives and continue their journey toward healing and recovery.

The 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) is an annual advocacy initiative in the Philippines that runs from November 25 to December 12. This campaign is mandated by Proclamation 1172 signed in 2006, which aligns with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and concludes on International Human Rights Day, emphasizing that violence against women is a violation of human rights.

Campaign Activities

The campaign includes various activities aimed at:

  • Promoting awareness of the forms and consequences of violence against women.

  • Providing information on existing laws that protect women and girls, such as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act and the Safe Spaces Act.

  • Highlighting available services for victims of violence.
Strengthening prevention and response systems for VAW.

  • Gathering public support and insights on awareness levels regarding VAW

Ang daming malulungkot na story sa buong mundo talaga. :(
Dapat talaga pinipili ng ma ayos ang makaka relasyon eh. :(

I only read stories such as these in Supreme Court jurisprudence but having to hear it from the victims themselves, oh my my. I might not be able to handle it. I stand with you in the campaign to end violence. And while it is an 18-day campaign, I believe this must be championed daily.
