You can't tell me there is nothing going on between you two?Selene curiously asked me, her ears must had been itching to hear the latest gists, scooped by yours' truly, myself. Her one month holiday to her aunt's place at Agege seemed to last forever in our eyes, though the video and audio calls were all still intact while she was away however, that couldn't still be compared to her physical presence in flesh and blood. Gosh! I missed her but i'm not that kind of person to say such to people's face - I do not want to see high shoulders in the air.
Selene returned few hours before this conversation stirred up and from what I sensed, she didn't tarry for any more minutes when she got home, she must had only dropped her luggage and hence, headed to my house headlong to buy herself plenty of time to spend with me before Mama calls.
Babe! trust me, there's no string between I and Sam, we are just friends, I sheepishly replied. Of course, I knew she wasn't satisfied with my response because, how do i explain to anyone that, I'm now friends with Sam, Sam of all people. Sam and I have been neighbours for the longest time I could remember, our parents became good friends as a result of this, howbeit, their good relationship didn't rub up on us, their children especially, I and Sam. We both attended the same basic school and college still, that doesn't stopped us from acting as mere strangers towards each other - It has always been Hello, Good morning , Hi and other short gestural greetings far from being called Friends.
Wonders never cease to end, my not so good rapport with Sam took a sporadic good turn when Selene's absence brought me to my lowest - Selene's phone developed a fault and it was beyond repair, this left us both with one route of communication, her aunt. Unfortunately for us, her aunt usually retired home from work at dead hours, we couldn't keep up with that so, we both decided to patiently wait until Selene returned from her trip.
"Dee! you don't mean it, just friends?"Selene inquired again. I reached out to carry the plastic armed chair next to me, my legs were beginning to demand for rest in their subtle way.
"Seriously Selene! when did you start doubting my words?' I asked in the most furious way she had never seen before.
"I'm sorry Dee", Selene repeatedly said hence, calming my nerves. Afterwards, there was a long silence for minutes until Selene unilaterally decided we've had enough of it.
"What you are professing is quite contrary to what I heard on my way here. I saw Sam and his cliques along that dusty untiled road, opposite the pharmaceutical drugs store ,I had to move closer to them since, their chatty noise have deafen their ears from responding to my greetings, haven't been shouting on top the roof of my voice for minutes, calling out each of their names. However, after moving close to them, I heard what I can not unheard no matter how much I tried on my way here. Apparently, Sam has been feeding his minions with lies about you. How you've been so clingy with him and indirectly sending signal to him to be your boyfriend and how you always nagged about him not being actively online. I know this sure isn't you or has something changed?" Selene's eyes beamed for answer as she pose this question.
"Sure, you know that's not me, I'm quite sure the reason why Sam is spreading such News is to feel himself (feel important). Have known Sam to be sly that was why I kept my distance from him all these years but people do change right? I thought so too when Sam approached me, initiating to be friends with me but I never knew he would stoop this low just to earn some points", I replied Selene's question with gushing furiousness written all over me.
"I believe you Dee! you know have never liked that Sam guy, what do you plan to do now? How will you turn this side of the table over to him?", Selene calmly asked.
"Let's pay him with his coin Selene, I know you have a knack in this so, I'm gonna entrust you with this. Tell everyone who cares to listen who Sam is truly his and allow Karma do the rest of the job", I told her.
Few weeks down the lane, Sam became an outcast in the neighborhood and even at school for a long time, obviously, no sane person would want to associate with such a person.
