Democracy in Ghana: A Flawed System?

in #hive-15385021 days ago
We Africans talk about how most of our countries are democratic but when you look at things from a clearer view, we haven’t even fully gained independence because our colonial masters are in one way of the other still pulling strings here and there. Take Burkina , Mali and other francophone countries for instance. As of 2023 , France was still trying to meddle in the affairs of these countries in one way or the other to exploit from them.

The system in most African countries is rigged to favor those at the top. We talk about having
free and fair elections but each election year we see how political parties go out of their way to bribe citizens to vote for them, ballot boxes getting stolen , people losing their lives and so many more activities you can’t begin to imagine. So, where’s the democracy here when everything is being manipulated right from the top of the chain to the bottom.

Now, let’s talk about the ministerial positions in government. In Ghana, I’d like to believe the president appoints his ministers and they would have to be approved by the parliament. Now, tell me why most of these appointed ministers are in one way or the other having something to do with the president. It’s either they’re family members, members of his political party and what have you. And even putting that aside, how does a country have new ministries after every election. Some of these new ministries being formed are not even necessary but they just do that to try to steal from the country’s coffers.

I remember back then when we had a different political party governing the country. We all know how freedom of speech works and so you’d see how citizens express their displeasure when they don’t feel happy about some happenings. Most at times you’d listen to media houses interview people or even they themselves would talk about matters arising and that was one way Ghanians used to get the government up and working. Recently, it’s the reverse. You can’t even speak about your worries anymore because you’d be arrested for no reason. I remember how this influencer was allegedly arrested and beaten by ‘police’. We still don’t know the whole story but all this was because they claim he said bad stuff about the president. Maybe he deserved it but someone cannot talk his mind again in this country.

2024 is an election year for Ghana and after all the shege we have seen over the past 8 years, I’d like to believe that Ghanaians have come back to their senses and won’t allow anyone influence them or buy their vote. I think political parties should be restricted from having access to citizens during the election or a few days to elections so that citizens can have a clear mind to vote. Let’s not be moved by bags of rice, oil or 50 Ghana cedis. We deserve better than our votes being bought , and our voices being silenced. Let democracy be democracy!

Or you haven’t seen that video of the mp sharing yoghurt?😂

Anyway, you want to “talk your mind” in this Ghana? Talk and see🤣
I wish you all the best

Ah ah, yoghurt deir why?😂😂

They will arrest you for no reason. I beg way let everyone be quiet and suffer. We will meet on December 7th.

Corruption, bribery, Godfatherism and what have you is the other of the day, the poor masses are tired! In my country Nigeria it’s actually clear that it is non-democratic country, nothing is for the people again, only the government and their families and friends enjoy the national cake

That’s the problem most African counties are facing and those up there do it right in our faces. I hope we remember all that we have been through when it’s time to cast our vote.

I really really hope so

I agree with you, many politicians should focus on finding solutions for the population, unfortunately they only look after their interests, their finances. I hope things improve in Ghana, my best wishes so that all people feel happier and calmer.

My best wishes to you!

It is sad to know the worst situation of Democracy in Ghana. Politicians should agree for people's benefits but I have seen that they fight and see their own personal matters pulling public in taxes. A democratic country has more chances of Development.

Sometimes democracy isn’t even democracy because tell me why you can’t talk about your problems as a citizen because you’d be arrested while the government keeps taking our taxes all the time. Where’s the democracy in this?

Thanks for passing by.

All bad bad things, just full African countries 😂 I'm just tired of reading same thing everywhere 😂. The question is, can these so called countries become better. Expcially Nigeria?

😂😂😂 we are our own enemies in our countries. There’s a long way for us to fix things but I hope we decide to start now.

You are correct about our elections but that of Nigeria is the worse. You can't compare Ghana to Nigeria when we talk about corruption. In Nigeria here almost all our leaders are corrupt, maybe that may not be the case in Ghana. We need God's help

It’s the same everywhere oo.😂😂 God should cleanse their hearts.
