The Complexities of Student Performance

I remember everything like it was yesterday. Monday morning, hot mental in an all subjects and 5 lashes for one wrong answer. You dare not show up to class late and also dare not answer the questions wrongly. At the end of an hour of tough questions and answer sessions coupled with tears, we would go about our week like nothing happened, praying in our hearts for the next Monday to never come.

Those days, we thought our teachers hated us because they beat us too much. If we complained, they say spare the rod and spoil the child. Even though I wouldn’t totally agree that using canes on us was the best way to keep us on our toes, I believe they saw it to be the best way at that time and their efforts payed off. This brings me to the point I want to make- No teacher wishes for his students to perform badly, even though there are exceptions.

Teaching has to be the most difficult job ever and there’s no two ways about that. Without the teacher, most of us wouldn’t be who and what we are today. A teacher has to make sure all his students are on the same page and these days , with the huge number of students in the class, it’s quite a challenge for teachers. Even though in some parts of the world, teaching doesn’t pay, it shows how even with the low income there are people out there who wish to groom the future leaders.

When it comes to a student’s academics, I would say the teacher plays a 40% role and the 60% lies in the hands of the parents and the students. Teachers spend about 7 to 8 hours with students while parents have more time with their wards. The teacher teaches and does his best to keep the kids in check and ready for the world. But, as they say, consistency is key.

Consistency drives everything and gives good results. If your ward goes to school and comes home to sleep on his books, would you blame the teacher if your ward performs badly in exams? You obviously won’t because you as the parents didn’t hold your ward accountable and also you failed to help him revise and stay consistent. It’s more like everything passing through one ear and coming out of the other.

As a parent, it’s very important to know your wards academic standing. I can bet you there are parents who don’t even know their kid’s teachers yet they wonder why their kids perform poorly in school. When I was in primary, we used to have a day set aside for our parents to come and go through our books in school and also talk to our teachers to know about our growth and our performance. But it’s been a while I have heard of that.

The educational system has undergone a drastic change, but that doesn’t mean you as a parent should just sit back and watch things go sideways. At the end of the day, your kids are your legacy while the teacher is only there to impact. If a teacher is doing his work poorly, it will reflect in the performance of the whole class but if he’s not, then we know who to blame. I believe this issue is subjective but looking at it, everyone is involved. From the student, to the parents , to the teacher and even the educational system.

Seriously, parents don't have time to visit their children's school to check their books again - a lot of excuses here and there. Where I was working during my service, it's a public school. Anytime they call for PTA meeting, only a 20% out of 100 would show up - so poor and they think their kids would do well? No. They also have their roles to play and not thinking teachers are magician to make it happen overnight.

Although, we wouldn't take the teachers out of this too because they also need to learn the rudiments in education and how to give their students the best when it comes to learning.

You don’t come for PTA meeting yet you wonder why your kid is performing badly. Some parents need to do better.

I think of teachers should draw the parents in bit by bit it will help.

The lack of discipline like it was in the past is indeed a big issue faced by both parents, teachers, and students, it needs to be improved by all.

I agree with you.
