Last night after dinner at the hotel we decided to take a walk along the beach. The sand here is very light, almost white and the clouds were luminous overhead. Lit by a combination of moonlight and possibly lights from across the resort.
We had the place to ourselves and we could glimpse Cozumel on the near horizon, a lighthouse scanning the sky with its rotating beam, the distant specks of cruise ships and perhaps a seemingly silent disco from across the bay. Reminds me strangely of the song Babylon Sister, Steely Dan.
It dawned on me that in one direction, if you set sail from this point, you would reach within no time - Cuba, The Caymen Islands, Dominican and in the other direction Florida Keys.
On the horizon we could see the waves breaking on the second largest Coral Reef in the World, second of course to Australias Great Barrier.
Further along the beach, we watched a cluster of scurrying head torched staff raking the beach in readiness for the next day. The people here are hard workers. I smirk at the existence of the Elite club area, thinking it a bit of a disgrace but then aren’t we no better as “wealthy” tourists.
