Some time ago, my friend and I was taking a night walk in the calm streets of Aba road, Umuahia Abia state, when we heard the sound of somebody running, coming from behind us. We looked back to see what they are running from, but the only thing we saw was somebody who was doing exercise, jogging, to keep fit.
Due to the fact the person was slim, My friend, in a sarcastic tone said; person never chop food get flesh, en come dey jog to remove the one wey en get. shey if breeze blow, this guy no go fly like paper. Meaning; He has not yet eaten enough to gain weight, and he's trying to lose the little he has. If a little wind blows, it will carry the guy along like paper.
I know he was joking, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of lecturing him about the importance of exercise irrespective of your body size.
Health they say is wealth. Exercise brings about good health, but some persons always have one excuse or the other to not exercise. Some people actually love doing exercises, and there are other people that don't like exercise. Some say its a thing of rich people, some say its stress while some say its a thing of fat people who are looking to lose weight.
They think that; due to the fact that they are not yet fat, and are passing through stress at work, there is no need to do exercise because it will be like they are adding more stress to their lives. While this may sound logical, its actually not.
Exercise, is not actually stress because it helps the body in many ways. It is important to understand that not all physical activity is exercise. Some can cause negative stress, Distress (a type of stress), while some can improve the body function.
Except exercise intolerant people and people who can not do exercise due to one medical condition or the other, I don't think there is any complications of exercise, instead, physical activities has a lot of good things it does to the body.
Some of the many importance of exercise includes: improved immunity, weight management, it helps with bone density, it improves endurance, it reduces stress levels (remember when I mentioned distress? yeah, it helps reduce that), it helps you stay more focused as it improves brain activity, it also improves blood circulations as well as body metabolism. Have you ever done exercise before going to bed? try it today and note how quality the sleep you get will be.
The importance of exercise are numerous, so, whether big, small, fat, slim, skinny, tall or short, it is important to do exercise given that you don't have any medical condition that contradicts it. Always check with your doctor to be sure of your health status first.
