A Worthy End to a Wild Ride | The Umbrella Academy Film Review

in #hive-166847last month

After two years, the final and fourth seasons are now here. Although I had forgotten some things about the previous ones, watching them again reminded me of so much that I loved and missed about the series. And the ending is what I like most about the finale. I couldn't have asked for better closure.

I initially couldn't connect to the series much when I first found it. It had a quirky beginning that didn't pique my interest. It was when I discovered that it was also about time travel and superpowers that it got my attention. And I have followed through till the end ever since.

Now, although the film was about a family of people with powers, it wasn't centred on that. The plot is much deeper, and it also shows good craftmanship in its storytelling character development.

On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. In their teenage years, though, the family fractures and the team disbands.

Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves' passing. They work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father's death, but divergent personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart, and a global apocalypse is another imminent threat. The series is based on a collection of comics and graphic novels created and written by My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way.

In the first three seasons, the Hargreeves family members repeatedly destroyed the world, but each time they managed to save it. One last time, they gather together to save it once and for all, but at a cost they never considered.

What I generally like about the fourth season is that it manages to bring back many things from the previous seasons without causing chaos or trying to give a good ending to the film. Unlike the previous seasons, however, there are fewer episodes, and it felt a bit rushed and with fewer intricacies. I enjoyed it very much regardless, especially for the characters.

If anything had been changed about the characters in this finale, it may have greatly affected the film for me. They all just worked well together. And as usual, their actors gave their all to portray each of them excellently.

My favourite remains Aidan Gallagher, who played Five. Many times, I forgot that he really isn't a 56-year-old man in a teenager's body for how well he played his parts. He, just like the other main actors, was perfect for his role.

I laughed very hard many times this season. I don't remember much about my reactions in the previous seasons, but I love how there were so many comical elements in the film. Many hilarious moments from quirkyness, sarcasm, and many more.

The series subtly touches on many aspects of the reality of life and presents them in intriguing and entertaining ways.

Cinematography is a strong suit in season four. The visual storytelling with the angles couldn't go unnoticed. There were depths to certain scenes just by the camera angle, lighting, and transitions. I applaud the filmmakers for putting in great effort.

All through the film, I was eager to see just how it would all end. Surely, being the finale, they couldn't end the series like they did in the previous seasons with a cliffhanger. Yet there had to be something fitting for closure. What it turned out to be allowed me to give a sigh of relief, satisfaction, and contentment.

Two years was sure a long time to get this finale, but I am glad that it was totally worth the wait. In these times when superhero films aren't receiving that much love for "running out of content," it's always nice to see creative and worth-while films like this save the day. The superheroes are, however, not your regular kind.
