These blue pills did me dirty

in #hive-15385010 days ago

Sleeping was an issue for me one time. Nothing in particular was the problem. It just didn't come naturally. So I thought to opt in for sleeping tablets. The nearest pharmacy gave me these blue pills—eight of them in one packet, I think—and they worked like magic. Then I used them wrongly one time and didn't like myself for hours and hours.

We had just finished the semester exams, and I had barely had good sleep in days. My eyes were twitching, but I still couldn't bring myself to sleep proper, having gotten used to forcing myself to stay awake. I was feeling even more restless by the minute, and so I thought the blue pills would save me.

I couldn't have been more wrong that day.

Two pills—that was the regular dose. I did take just two, but I don't know how it was so different this time. The opposite happened.

I could not sleep. It was like I took caffeine pills instead. It was so horrible. My eyes were bloodshot. I felt my blood pressure rising, as well as my temperature. I felt even more restless. And I was just there for hours, begging for sleep to fall upon me so I could rest.

I don't think I could have wished that even for my enemy. It was horrible. No one could have prepared me for such an experience.

Somehow, the whole thing wore off, and I finally found sleep. When everything was over, no one had to tell me to dump the blue pills and never use them again.

And that's the thing about self-medicating. You most likely don't know enough about your body—at least most of the time—to attend to it properly. It can be dangerous, even deadly.

For me, I only know three types of illness. Or, rather, I classify everything that is doing me in this life under three categories. It's either a cold, malaria, or diarrhoea that is my problem. And really, it could be something far different from those three, but because there are certain medications that worked in the past, I would go get them again.

So if it's cold, that's the problem; procold is the way. If it's a headache, paracetamol or panadol do the magic. If it is malaria, I can't even count the number of available medications for that here; I would just go get one straight up.

Many times, self-medication is often trial-and-error for me. And one time, I did so poorly, guessing what was wrong with me.

I thought headache was the issue, so I did the "normal thing" and went to get one at the nearest pharmacy. For some time, I felt relieved. Then it began to surface not long after. Of course, I took another dose, thinking that would solve it. After the third dose at the end of the day, I realised that it was more than just the headache.

Since I was beginning to shiver when it was barely cold, I thought cold was the issue. So, you already know what I did. I went to buy medications for a cold. The first dose made me feel like I was on track. Then it got worse.

Then again, I concluded that it was malaria as its symptoms became more evident. I then started with malaria medications.

Eventually, I had to visit the hospital and really know what was going on. It turned out that I was pregnant. Two weeks pregnant! Can you imagine?? Who would have known?

But then, the doctor looked one more time and realised he read the machine upsidedown. It was actually malaria, but I was using the wrong medications. The right ones were then prescribed to me. And lo and behold, I recovered way faster than I got sick. I just wasted money, time, and three days of good food.

This self-medication thing is really wrong most of the time, yet many of us still do it. I have had a very big share of health issues this year alone to underestimate any sickness at this point. My only challenge is getting to health centres quickly enough. However, it's better safe than sorry.

Thank God I read through it properly, because the next question I wanted to ask was "Who got you pregnant?"🤣🤣🤣 Ehnnn.

Self-medication isn't healthy, though it might be the cheapest and easiest way to treat an illness but then it is risky to our health at the same time.

Who got you pregnant?

They said I should not tell anybody o

Self-education is not always cheap, though. Some people can spend a lot of money on drugs that worked for them before. The sad part is when it doesn't work...

Ooh okay but we will still know😁😁 when the time comes..

The issue with sleeping pills 💊 are big trouble. Once your system did not accept it at a point in time, the reaction will be hash especially if we don’t know the one that will work perfectly for us.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm no longer even looking for the one that works for me. What I discovered is that I sleep much better and longer when I exercise regularly. I hope you're not part of us.

Hahaha 🤪. Exercise is the best way to have sound regular sleep hours.

My job as a Realtor is one that is demanding, and coupled with hive and family, sleeping is the one that calls my attention because at the end of the day I don’t even need any exercise. Haha 😆

I don’t think 💭 I have ever tasted sleeping bills and don’t hope to. Just work your energy out, sleep 😴 will be bagging you.

Have a nice mid-week.

Agreed. I opt for more natural options. Chamomile or some other sort of sleepy tea, listening to sleep/meditation type of music. I'm a fan of Brain.FM for their binaural beats music that supports a whole host of needs. If I need focus or need to unwind or need to sleep, etc.

Exactly. We should always know what is good for our body. What works for others may not work for us.

Going natural is my take and some multivitamins is a good support in all that we do.

Enjoy your day beautiful 😻

People don't know how dangerous self medication can be, you were fortunate that you didn't end up in a hospital, you might think nothing was wrong but the truth is that you system can not deny you sleep when everything is okay.

The best thing to do is see a doctor who will run a check on you even if there is need for sedatives as we call them the doctor will know the perfect one and the dosage for your system.

The problem we are having in this country is that pharmacist, nurses even sales personal in a pharmacy, all claim to be doctors.

I definitely would have gotten better diagnosis and prescriptions from a real doctor if I had visited.

I think too many people think that knowing what certain drugs do passes them as doctors, even people that don't know anything.

There are so many people claiming to be medical practitioners and that has caused many problem for people

The doctor should be sued for wrong diagnosis because how on earth would he diagnose a whole Jay with pregnancy.

Pregnancy!!!!! Thank God he found that again that it was malaria before you started antenatal.

Actually self medication can make small issues become a huge problem in the blink of an eye so it's better to consult a doctor to be sure of what's happening and the right medication for it.

The blue pill sounds like ref... Hmmmmmmmm

😂 Sir, I don't understand too o. And antenatal is not cheap. Lmao! I have been careful ever since.

The blue pill sounds like ref... Hmmmmmmmm

Me don't know o 😁

We need to keep in mind that we are not doctors. Self-medication can be applicable for the minor issues. I think each time the situation is different and we should not apply the same medicine the doctor prescribed us in the past. If we do so, the result can be horrible. It's better to not practice self-medication in sensitive cases.

That's actually true. Illnesses could differ, and sometimes very much. Glad it didn't end horribly. Better to see a doctor no matter what.

This self-medication thing is really wrong most of the time, yet many of us still do it. Let's say many of us just have the 'avoid the doctor syndrome' 😂. Adding to that, not all have the funds to meet up doctor's prescription. Still in this, it's always the right think to visit a doctor, they are health experts.

I think there is this level of confidence that appears when we fall sick, making us think we know our bodies better. We're usually wrong, and it's deadly yet we don't even realise. Are you one of us, sir?

Are you one of us, sir? I wouldn't say no. One of those guys that give the doctors far distance 😂

Its quite an effective article you have here, no doubt response will keep coming, I'm kinda of guilty as well in this aspect of self prescribing.

In my personal opinion basic illness should be handled by us, hence physical intelligence improvement, that's exactly why a first aid box exist. Just not too long while I was going about my day I felt a pain in my left shoulder each time I tried to lift it up and when I tried working out again the pain was something else, luckily (grace from GOD) enough for me I have always loved physical activities so I started researching and studying the pain not just turning to pain relieve drugs immediately (which is the worst response in this case), I figured out I had bursitis, a mild one and I got it from wrong technique in learning a calisthenics skill, so I was got prescription from my research and I'm really better than before.

In essence I'm putting to each and everyone of us to have a standard knowledge on physiology and other common pathogens (Improving physical intelligence) before self prescribing it's a lot safer and cuts costs.

I think it's impressive that you did a lot of research. I would consider that as self-diagnosis and similar to self-medication, though, but I'm glad that you were right and it worked for you. Would be nicer if people could do in-depth researches on what's bothering them rather than assuming.

That's true, basic illness are easy to cure and handle when properly study. With studying we can actually differentiate our problems thereby knowing which one requires a doctor's prescription, for me if it worsen after self medication from research you are highly advised to see a doctor, for me that's how it's meant to be, apply first aid and watch out for it's likely not the complete aid you need. Thanks for the reply.

Eventually, I had to visit the hospital and really know what was going on. It turned out that I was pregnant. Two weeks pregnant! Can you imagine?? Who would have known.

When I read this part, I was confused. Like, how can a man be pregnant nah?!
Abeg, no dey toy with person emotion again jare...😂😂😂

Self-medication is the devil in angel's form. We think it saves us, but when it goes wrong just once the repercussions may be deadly.

Like, how can a man be pregnant nah?!

Sir, how do you not know that I'm a lady? 🤨
