Viseu City - Dom Duarte Square - Historic Center

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Dom Duarte Square - historic center.jpg

I'm back in Viseu!
I spent countless weekends here. When I was a girl we all went in vans, camped in the garden where Viriato is and slept waiting for the São Mateus Fair.
This fair lasts 39 days, imagine that, but nowadays it's very different from what it was 30 years ago (I can't believe it's already been 30 years).

Voltei a Viseu!

The improvised barbecue was set up and we spent the days walking and playing. There were many of us, including cousins and family friends, so there was no shortage of children.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the entire city and show everything it has to offer. I hope you like the places we selected :-)
Viseu is a city with a great historical-cultural heritage and full of color due to its gardens.

As soon as we arrived we looked for a place to park and went to a small square surrounded by restaurants. The hustle and bustle of a new day was already felt and we saw restaurant employees busy preparing the tables for lunch.
As we didn't know if we could park there, I asked one of the employees there and to my surprise he asked me to speak in English as he didn't speak Portuguese. In the Algarve area this has been increasingly noticeable but I didn't think it would happen to me in central Portugal.
Maybe or not we were in Praça Dom Duarte, one of the most important in the city and named after the king born here in 1391.

In the center of the square, a statue was erected in his honor in 1955 by the hands of the sculptor Alvaro de Brée.
You can still see the Canons' Balcony behind the statue, but I'll talk about it later.
We always head down the streets and alleys as this is where we capture a lot of the city's history.
Almost all the buildings are extremely well maintained and almost all of them have been restored.

Local businesses are present on almost every street and the sun that illuminated the facades made everything more beautiful.
The memories kept coming back to me and with them the desire to have a time machine and be able to go back even if it was just to observe.
From here we continue exploring and right next door we have another very important square.
But that's for tomorrow.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
