A good accountant earns his own fee!

Switching accountants

Accounting is a very important part of small businesses, and of course bigger enterprises. But it is in the majority of small businesses a part of their business plan that is skipped. They have an accountant and they pay his fee, and that's it. But there is so much more to an accountant than that. In fact, here in Belgium there is a golden rule. Imagine your accountant costs you a fee of 5000 USD per year, he should bring in at least the same amount in tax cuts for you. So, in reality your accountant pays himself.

Experience

I can vouch for this, because I have had some very peculiar experiences with accountants. My very first accountant did an awful job, he in fact made horrible mistakes that were luckily spotted by us, but too late. So he cost us a lot more than the fee we had to pay him every year. So, just in time, we changed to another accountant, which in that era, about 15 years ago was a breath of fresh air, and set a lot of things straight.
It was a good step for our company, which made it able for us to grow. But now, 15 years later, I have noticed that it is time to hop over to a new breath of fresh air. Another accounting agency that has grown with the digital revolution, and especially has another take on the ever changing taxation legislation.

So, tonight I have an appointment with that new agency, and hopefully we can agree on a collaboration that will benefit us both!

When to change?

The big question I get from customers is, when do I know it is time for change? Well, that is actually easy, if your accountant doesn't inspire you anymore, it is time for change. An accountant should warn you for dangers, but should also bring in new ideas or new angles to approach your business. If that is lacking, it is very much time to look for someone new!

Because remember, your accountant can make or break your business, never forget that!

Sincerely,

A mistake that many people do (mainly in countries like USA) is not to pay to an accountant for prepare and fill their taxes report. If you have low income is comprensible, but if you earn 6 figures I think that is neccesary one.

It is a fact that in order to run a business, it is necessary to have such a person who is able to do all kinds of calculations, otherwise the business will go into loss.
