When we were young, we watched movies/films for fun, even songs, we only wanted the beat to sound sweet with a lot of dance steps for it, and we never cared whether the song lyrics made meaning or something we could learn from, all we wanted was to feel the beat, rhythm and excitement.
For movies, we just want to laugh so hard and have fun with the jokes we get from them. The likes of Papa Ajasco, Fuji House of Commotion, Super Story etc, were fun and at the same time felt sad about some, even though we never understood life then. What concerns children!
Everything has changed now. Everyone is now exposed to the real world and the fairness and unfairness of life. All we need is something to learn from, educate, inspire and encourage us. We want something to keep our hopes alive while trusting in the process. While we are sad, we want a work of art we can stare at and make more meaning from it than just look at it without picking something from it.
This doesn't mean we shouldn't watch movies or listen to songs for entertainment purposes but what's the essence of wasting time on something meaningless? Even if it doesn't apply to us, it can apply to someone else who needs to learn and be inspired by it.
Life is more than what it was some decades ago. We are now living in a delicate world and all we need is a push to keep us going. Something we can stare at and gives us a ray of hope and not one that won't interest us. At least while having fun in a thing, we should take something from it.
For me personally, a movie or song is good and worth listening to or watching only if I could take something from it. I watch movies with rapt attention hoping to gain something from it. Even when there are lots of funny scenes, I still must get something out of it because it's considered wasting of time to watch works of art and not pick something meaningful from them.
An artist needs to have an intention of why he is making something out for others to see because it serves as the soul of whatever they are creating. It is what drives them to give their work depth and connection to the audience. This doesn't mean every piece must carry a profound meaning, sometimes, the intentionality of their artwork leads to joy or curiosity for the one listening or watching.
In life, our intentions are what matter and so, it is important to find the intent of an art so you can admire its work and creativity more while appreciating the author or creator. When a work of art comes with deep thinking, purpose and a message, it becomes evergreen; one, everyone would want to tune in every time because of its weight. This doesn't just entertain, but engages the audience and even challenges them to take an action that could transform them and leave a lasting impact on them.
