Why Settling for Less isn't an Option

I reached out and confided in my friend about my job search because I have been done with my national service for over a week now and needed something to do alongside Hiving so I wouldn't rely on only a source of income, I needed something to keep me out of my room every day and appreciate life more, he then raised a valid concern. "Aren't you being selective?," he asked, knowing my passion for teaching.

But I gave my response, which is this, "That I love teaching does not mean or say I should settle for less." I very much understand how worried he is about me, especially since he knows how most schools especially the private ones often underpay their staff.

I had an interview at a private school a month ago and I was shocked at the pay they were offering me. The proprietress is willing to pay, and not in any way adding to it, a sum of thirty thousand naira (less than $18). In this economy? I had to reject such an offer as she was ready to employ me if I accept.

People would agree to how these people will use you and make you go through a whole lot of stress, in the end, they will pay such an amount which you might even use on drugs to treat yourself, or how they would owe their staff for months, the worst of it is how they would be deducting from your salary for the slightest error from you, what then is left at the end of the month? This cannot be enough for one's upkeep, not to add family's bills unless you have other work bringing in more income for you.

They were willing to retain me as a temporary teacher where I served because of the lack of an English language teacher with permission to work 3 days a week and they are offering to pay me ten thousand naira (less than $3), they said that is what they could afford. Imagine!

How much was I collecting as a youth corper while working with them? I received #48,000 monthly from both state and federal government and they want to pay me 10k monthly? What should I do with it? I looked up in shock at such an amount and I felt sad for calling such a small amount for me. I reject it. Nah! I can never settle for less. Not an option!

For me, teaching has gone far beyond just a job - it's a calling. This is a profession I pour my heart and soul into shaping young minds while inspiring future generations. However, that doesn't mean I should compromise on my worth. I believe that my dedication, commitment and expertise call for fair compensation and respect, not just for me but for other teachers who are in the same line as me.

I will continue in my job search by holding out for a position that aligns with my passion, skills and worth. This is not about being selective; it's about being discerning and driven to my dignity. If only the education system, especially in my country would help fight for teachers/educators in advocating for the value they bring to the system.

My dear they offered you 30k , that's a good offer o especially in my area where the highest is 15-18k.

Settling for less is not the best but what can some of us do.

Well, you are right. It's a good offer if you aren't far to the school. Like mine, I just want to relocate to Ibadan and I don't think I would find a good apartment close to the school. Imagine taking bike to and fro and what is left for me at the end of the day? Feeding too is there oo. My sister, I had to weigh the options to reject the offer.

Hmmm you wont even see a pay that will cross that 30k except uf you going for lecturing job. Or as a government teacher, but if its private that 30k is even high. Half bread is better than nothing

Hahaha. There are some higher though in some states like Bayelsa, PH, Lagos but be ready to work your a** off 😅😅

Well there you've said it

Hmmmm!
I love the decision you have make for yourself. The situation of country does not mean one should settle for less.
I kept saying it that, I would rather engage myself more in online jobs than settling for less, and a cheap pay.
Although, I have learned not to live any extravagant life, and I don't live beyond my pocket.
In anything, never settle for les, please it is very important.

Exactly. The important thing is to stay within one's budget and not live an extravagant or flashy lifestyle. The situation of the economy has gone beyond settling for less when there are better opportunities online. We just need to keep searching for the right ones.

That's just the logic.
This time is quite a very sensitive time, and it requires wisdom and encouragement.
This is the time, when people will be asking, what are you doing now?
It is the time when people will make you frustrated as a result of their behavior.
I pray God will not let us down, and he will help us in this very challenging period. Amen

Amen, my brother. God will help us all.
