The wedding season are going on in India. Everyday, I came across a new wedding procession in our locality. The groom appears to be happy and so does the girls. This make me to ask a question to myself. I was wondering, what are the attributes of a good wife, and how to be one?. Being a lady myself, it is importsnt to know what it takes to be a complete women to be able to meet all the expectation. My Parents alwsys used to say that person gets a good wife only because of fruition of past deed.
Our ancient Sanskrit too has following say in this regards :
अनुकूला विमलाङ्गी कुलजां कुशलं सुशीलसंपन्ना|
पञ्चलकारां भार्यां पुरुष पुण्योदयाल्लभते||
Anukoolaa vimalaangi kulajaam kushalaam sushilasampanna
Panchalakaaraam bhaaryaam purusha punyodayaallabhate.
Anukoolaa = favourable, friendly.
Vimalaangi = beautiful body. Kulajaam = born in a noble family. Kushalm = competent.
Susheela = good natured.
Sampanna = endowed with.
Pancha = five.
Lakaaraa = letters sounding 'la' Bhaaryaam = lawful wife.
Purusha = a person.
Punyodayaallabhate = punyodayat + labahte.
Punyodayaat = fruition of good fortune for observing religious austerity called 'Punya' .
Labhate = gets, is bestowed with.
The verses states that, 'A person gets a wife endowed with these five virtues, namely friendly behaviour, having a beautiful body, born in a noble family, competent and good natured, only on fruition of his 'Punya'(good fortune for observing religious austerity in his previous birth or in this lifetime).'
In our religion "punya" refers to good karma or virtuous deeds, which are believed to bring positive consequences in this life and future lives. In short it means helping a person by accumulating merit that leads to happiness, prosperity, and a favorable rebirth in the next life cycle.
A "good wife" is often described as someone who is caring, supportive, respectful, communicative, reliable, understanding, and puts the needs of her family first, demonstrating qualities like compassion, loyalty, and a willingness to compromise. While the qualities mentioned are generally considered positive, the "ideal bride" will vary depending on the individual and their partner's specific needs and expectations. I still have enough times in hand to learn the mentioned qualities.
