🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)

  • Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit
  • martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March

It's hard not to notice these large and loud woodpeckers in the forest. Their screams can be heard probably a kilometer away, and their voice cannot be confused with any other. Moreover, the calls differ in their actions, I mean that if a bird is sitting on a tree, then a certain cry is uttered. And if the bird is in flight, then the cry is of a different type and sound.

It is also very easy to recognize traces of this woodpecker’s presence in the forest. The trees will literally have no bark, and there will be a lot of sawdust and pieces of wood underneath. Unlike other species of woodpeckers, black woodpeckers are hard workers and can spend a long time examining and pecking at a tree.
