🦉 The common redpoll or mealy redpoll (Acanthis flammea)

  • Acanthis in ancient Greek. mythology daughter of Autonous and sister Acanthus; when Acanthis sobbed over the murdered Acanthus, the gods turned her into a bird.
  • flammea lat.: flamma flame, fire, fiery color flammeus

These northern birds, relatives of siskins, arrive at the end of October, when there is very little time left before winter. Migration is connected with the search for food, it is logical. These birds feed on seeds in winter. I often see how they like to climb in a flock to the tops of birches and eat seeds from birch catkins.

It is very funny to watch how they react sharply to their own voices if you turn them on the speaker of the phone. It would seem that the birds are not visible, but if you turn on the voices, then after a few seconds several birds fly in to look at the source of the sound.
