🦉 The Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), also known as the northern sparrowhawk

  • Accipiter accipere (lat.) to grab
  • nisus according to ancient Greek mythology Nisus (or Nisus), king of Megara, and his Skill's daughter, who betrayed her father because of her love passion for the enemy - the Cretan King Minos, were turned by the gods into birds of prey

I don't see these predators often, but that year I saw them more than any other. These photos show a male and a female. The male has distinct orange feathers on his head and under his wings, while the females don't have any orange color. It wasn’t even me who noticed these predators, but small birds, who, as soon as they saw them, began to squeal and inform everyone about the danger in the air.

And it is not surprising, because these predators feed on them. Occasionally they eat insects and rodents, but mainly their food is small birds.
I took the photo of the male at the beginning of spring, near a forest clearing. And the photo of the female is in the depths of the forest, but this place was near a clearing near the hills. This indicates that the habitats of these birds are near open spaces.
