🦉 The ruff (Calidris pugnax)
- Calidris kalidris or skalidris (Greek) unknown bird mentioned by Aristotle
- pugnax Latin: pugna battle, struggle, pugnax warlike, pugnacious
I have not met these sandpipers directly within the boundaries of my city, they probably live somewhere far from populated areas. However, they can be met during their migration period, which lies across the river of my city.
I met these guys in the photo at the end of September. By that time the river had become considerably shallower and exposed the rocks that had been hidden under water since winter. These Pinocchios were peacefully resting on a stone island. I saw them from afar and went straight to them jumping from rock to rock in the middle of the river. Some birds woke up and started looking for food wandering around the rocks, while others continued to rest.
