Making a high-neck maxi dress: cutting my dress according to my cloth

in #hive-12791111 days ago

Hello fellow needleworkers! Hope you all are staying as creative as always. I'd love to share with you a dress I made for a recent event.

I was invited to an impromptu event and the dress code is black dress paired with any pink headwear. Simple right? But I had never realized I didn't have a plain black dress until now. Since I didn't have any plain black dress, I thought of buying a simple black dress because my schedule for the week was tight. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a dress I liked and everything was either overpriced or of low quality.

Friday afternoon, a day before the event, after finishing a client cloth, I decided to make something quick and easy. I checked my fabric stash and I found a leftover black crepe fabric I had used for a previous project. It wasn't much not even up to 3 yards.

I check for inspirations on Pinterest, I sketch out a design inspired by the styles I find on Pinterest. I wanted something long. I have been in my modest fashion era lately. I knew the fabric would not be enough for the design I wanted, so I tried to cut down the design to fit what I had, hence the title “cut your coat according to your cloth” and that's exactly what I did.

I made the sleeves really small and the gathers on the two sides are less full than the original sketch just to manage the fabric.

Materials used: Black crepe, threads, invisible zip, and bias binding.

The process:

I drafted a princess dart and cut

I joined the pieces together

I cut the back piece

I cut the skirt part, which is the lower part of the dress

I sew the skirt part And sew it to the upper part

I gathered the sides of skirts and sewed them together

I cut the sleeves and sew it to the dress

i sew bias binding on the edge of the neckline and sleeves then I hem it down

I folded the bottom of the dresses as well and here is the final look.

i love the dress, especially the upper part. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

This dress is beautiful. I also sew, but I confess that I am afraid of darts, especially of placing them wrong and not being able to really fulfill their function. The fit you achieved is beautiful. I truly congratulate you.

Darts can be awkward especially when they are not done right.
