Going on dates can be so much fun. It's an avenue for people to spend time together, get to know each other and many more. My idea of a date is always centered around a “Guy and Lady” date. I also go on dates with my female friends, just to hangout and have fun.
But just like every other thing in the world, sometimes things don't always go the way it was planned.
I once went on a date with an acquaintance of mine,A.J. We met in school through a mutual friend and he seemed like an okay guy. Though we don't see each other frequently because we weren't in the same department.
Few years after school, someone from our set got our details from our yearbook and created a WhatsApp group. He ended up adding a whole lot of us to the group. Some people were angry because they were added without their consent and immediately exited the group. I also wanted to leave but seeing lots of people I knew from school made me change my mind.
The aim of creating the group was to plan to get together which would happen at a later time. About a week later, I got a private message from A. J. I didn't have his number beforehand but I recognized him through his profile picture. I figured he must have gotten my number from the group as I later found out he was also added to it.
We started chatting and we actually vibed a bit. Our conversation one day led to work and he told me where he works at the time and also that he was around at his parent's place. When he asked where I stayed, I told him and he exclaimed.
It turned out that his parent's house was not too far from mine. It was surprising that over the years we both lived in the same area and never knew, we laughed over it and talked about other things.
The next day, he chatted me up and asked that we go on a date, to talk, to catch up as it's been a while since we saw each other. I agreed and we decided to have lunch at a well known restaurant.
On the day, I arrived there to find him waiting for me at the restaurant. I found him seated on a table for six. I found it weird but I didn't bother asking as I proceeded to join him at the booth.
We placed our order and started eating and also chatting as well. It didn't take long before some group of people came in. I didn't take much notice of them until they approached our table and greeted A.J. There were 4 in number (2 guys and two ladies). He shook hands with the guys and asked them to join us on our table.
I was immediately uncomfortable as I didn't realize it was a tmultiple date. They greeted me and I immediately recognized one of the ladies as a student I had taught during my teaching practice year about three years back.
“I didn't know it was a group date”, I remarked seeing as my date didn't care that I wasn't feeling uncomfortable with the additional crowd on our table.
Don't mind us ma, we just came to have fun as well”, one of the guys tried covering up but I didn't miss the glances the guys exchanged including A.J.
I felt so odd amongst them as I saw that they were younger guys.I didn't want to be a killjoy so I tried to bear withit. What made it more weird was the fact that I remembered how I used to advice this girl I knew amongst them while she was still in school. I do tell her back then to stay off bad guys who wants to take her pride and focus on her education.
Though she pretended like she didn't recognize me but I knew she was not comfortable seeing me there as well. The last straw was when the guys started ordering alcholic drinks, indirectly taunting that the juice we were having is kid's drink.
Furthermore, they started speaking loudly talking about anything and everything, all the while A. J didn't even mind that it was supposed to a date between the two of us.
I just knew that I couldn'tt bear it any longer and asked to take my leave.
“Ha, Don't leave us na”, one of the guys said while I tried to force a smile.
“I'm sorry but something came up, please take care of yourselves”, I said standing up. The two ladies also stood allowing me to pass and as I came out of the booth, I turned to the Deziree, the girl I knew amongst them. “It's nice to see you again Deziree, have fun”, She smiled akwardly and sat down.
My date A.J also asked to be excused so he would see me to the door. As he came up behind me, he tried placing his hands on my waist but a look from me made him keep his hands to himself (Oh! I thought you didn't know how to read body language), I thought within me.
He saw me to the door and waved goodbye saying that we will talk. I muttered a response not minding if he heard me or not.
I got back home regretting ever saying Yes to the date.
