Google playing monopoly by increasing price of YouTube Premium Family unreasonably

in #hive-16792218 days ago

Did the CEO of Google made this decision because people in India use the Family plan even though they don't belong to the same family ?

Just few months back, I had taken the YouTube Premium Membership for the family and it used to cost ₹189 monthly for six members. And now they have increased that to ₹299 - a straight 58% jump and the reason for that ?

We don’t make these decisions lightly, and this update will allow us to continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.

Definitely, not a reasonable justification that would actually improve the quality of Premium to such extent. You can look at Premium features here :

https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/2024-youtube-premium-features/

And interestingly, they have increased the Family membership with this big hike but other membership fees are raised in 15-20% range. May be because they know ( their CEO belonging to India) how people in India go for the cheapest option and share the family plan among six members, who are not actually family members. If you divide that price by six, that comes as the cheapest price and that holds true, even with the price hike. So those practicing this sharing option, may still continue.

We have to agree to this new pricing by October 3, otherwise our subscription will end before the new price takes effect. So I will just silently enjoy till the current premium membership is over and then switch to basic, that would come with ads.

Coming to our usage, truly we don't need the premium membership, because we don't use youtube very extensively. Sometimes kids go through some tutorials and we see some songs, but paying such a price for that, is not worth that. And even, we would use max three devices at home, so everyone agrees to give up this Premium Membership for now.

Do you use YouTube Premium Membership ? What's your reaction to the current price hike ?

Never tried premium.. I thought YouTube is always free.😊 I think that's part of business. Everything nowadays increase values.😪

I thought YouTube is always free

Nothing is free in this world, not even blessings now a days😜

Hahaha, Oh.. thank you for reminding me today that nothing is free. I think, if I go deeper of what you mean about no free blessings, it means, that if I don't do my part, it's expected that blessings will not come to me. 😊 No free blessings.😁

The price difference between the old subscription price and now is a lot
Why is the hike like that?
I wouldn’t have paid😅

I'm surprised they haven't started to cut down on some of this over here. Especially with the whole netflix sharing thing that happened. I kind of expected other platforms to start implementing their own measures.

Till today I am still trying to figure out why will they actually increase the price of it

@tipu curate

I read somewhere that Premium will have ads just not as many?

All these subscriptions are getting too much. I know here in the UK people are not starting to cut back, additionally there are moves afoot to stop the use of mobile phones in schools for non emergency things.

We got used to doing so many things in Covid that have been adopted as the norm!

I thought about getting Premium but to be honest it is mainly my wife who watches YouTube, and she has her favourite vloggers she watches, and she does not mind the ads as some of that revenue is supposed to go to the channel creators...

she does not mind the ads as some of that revenue is supposed to go to the channel creators...

Ya, should be good once we make up our mind.

Yea well I hope you decide what is best for you.

Can you please tell me what makes the YouTube premium different from the normal one?
Also, the hike in the family price is too much
It’s a lot of money!

what makes the YouTube premium different from the normal one?

Its add free and you can see all the premium benefits at this place :

The same thing happened here too, in my country. I switched to a basic plan instead of a premium plan. Since I can still get what I want with the basic plans too.

Ya, unless we are a frequent watcher, spending hours daily, it does not make sense to pay so much.

Yeah, that's why I feel it's not really needed

I dont use Youtube Premium, in fact never used it. But the one feature that fascinates me the most is the downloadable video. I use ad-blocker to get rid of intruding ads.

But the recent rise may not bode well in India. The middle class is already concerned about the mobile recharge plan of Jio/Airtel in India, now they are looking for alternatives from BSNL. These expenses may not look inflated, but at the end of the month, they really take a toll on a middle-class family budget.

So I think you made a good decision to do away from the premium subscription.

Thank you.

100% agree.

🙏🙏🙏

I have never thought of using youtube premium because i am sure there wont be different except thr use of ads, and most times to avoid Ads i download the vidoes or tutorial i need offline. But if the price goes up and you sure it will be important if i was the one I wouldn’t mind risking it on it.

It’s surprising how much the price has jumped for the Family plan, especially with such a vague justification.

I'm never signing up to YT Premium, I'm okay with the free stuff :)

I think this is just corporate greed. They need to increase their listed profits compared to last year, so this is the easiest way to do it. Netflix has been doing the same. Youtube already has a big monopoly on viewers, and they are working on ways to combat ad blockers. So increasing their premium price is just a money grab.

I think what Google want to achieve is by diverting the attention and traffic to YouTube

an increase of 58% is excessive but hey, the price is what they assign to it. The truth is, I don't use those subscriptions, it's only when I want to see something in particular, we buy and that's it.

Sincerely, this justification for an increase in YouTube subscription does not seem sufficient must exist for what everyone knows the reasons for this increase
