Betrayal and Misdirection (Word of the Week, S5W4)

in #proofofbrain3 years ago

For better or worse, life connects family members by time, blood, or both. We first learn of life from those who grow around us. We learn to love and interact with the world from our experiences within the home. As a father, I find that one of the most challenging tasks of a parent is to protect their child. We hope, for instance, that by pretending there is a Santa, a child can enjoy one of the more festive times of the year.

What we don't always consider, however,
is what happens when that child
learns that Santa is a lie.

Sometimes we misdirect those we love. We do so to keep our children from seeing a harsher reality we feel they're not prepared to witness. What happens, however, when we misdirect ourselves from realizing our failure to misdirect as we intend? While chance favors the ready mind, we can't prepare for everything. This concept is especially true when a tragic and horrific event occurs after our interference.

Such is the story of the Bledsoe Family.

Heidi and Floyd Bledsoe lived within a trailer home in Oskaloosa, Kansas. They lived a humble life with their two sons. They loved each other despite a rocky relationship. Despite their troubles, they worked to improve the lives of themselves and those they loved. The Bledsoe family also took care of their own.

Heidi invited her sister Camille to live in their home, and the family grew by one. One day after getting home from school, she hopped off the bus and went to meet the family in their trailer home. Soon after, the world would never see her alive again.

Oskaloosa, Kansas is a small church-going community that tries to care for its own. When the family started searching for Camille, the town helped without hesitation. The town could find Camille nowhere. It seemed like the community had lost all hope. The family's church discussed Camille and the search activities to coordinate its efforts better. There was nothing more they could do until the church pastor received a fateful call from Floyd's brother Tom.

Murder and Misdirection

Floyd Bledsoe

Where is Camille? Floyd and Heidi spent days handing out fliers, searching all areas. They asked for help, received it, and continued to search everywhere they could consider.

Word eventually reached him that police found Camille's body on his parent's property. The killer was also in custody and was no other than his brother Tom. He rushed to the police station to find out if this was true.

Tom Bledsoe

Tom admitted to his pastor that he was so sorry for what he did to Camille. Shortly after that admission, he surrendered himself to the police. Tom confessed to them too, turned in the murder weapon, and even showed them the location of Camille's body. Tom did all this before his parents reached him.

The Betrayal

After speaking to his parents, Tom changed his confession. Tom reported to police that his brother Floyd committed the murder and rape of the 14-year old Camille. According to Tom, Floyd pressured him into confessing to the crime. Floyd knew that Tom tried to have sex with a dog and masturbated to pornography. If Tom didn't admit to the crime, Floyd would tell the whole town what Tom had done.

Yet, their betrayal of Floyd didn't end there. Tom and Floyd's parents came to the aid of Tom. They testified that Tom was with them the entire day and was never outside of the parents' sight. With no physical evidence connecting Floyd to the murders, a jury of his peers sentenced him to life without parole. No one wanted Tom incarcerated. Floyd would end up taking the fall.

Floyd once pleaded with his mother to help him and repeatedly told her that he had nothing to do with these horrid acts. His mother responded that she knew Tom didn't do it. She also said that next Floyd would be blaming his father for the crime too. Tom was the clear favorite of the family.

Imprisoned and Exonerated

Imprisonment

And so fate would have an innocent man sent to prison. His parents, prosecution, defense, and even police misdirected suspicions away from Tom and onto Floyd. The world will never truly know the reason for such incompetence and betrayal.

Exoneration

After ten years in prison, Floyd caught the attention of the Innocence Project. They accepted his case and proceeded to do what law enforcement failed to do: Analyze the DNA of the crime scene. What they found would lead to Floyd's freedom 15 years after his arrival to life imprisonment.

Life After Prison

Bledsoe family.PNG
MacKenzie Clark - Lawrence Journal World

Floyd reflects on the past now without anger. He takes things day by day and appreciates the little things that life offers. He has forgiven his parents and even his brother Tom. In prison, Floyd learned that living with hate is living without worth. There's nothing to be gained from seeking revenge or holding a grudge against people who have done you wrong. Unfortunately, there are some questions following his exoneration that he hopes to have answers to someday.

DNA Results

The DNA analysis requested by the Innocence Project showed that Tom's DNA, and not Floyd's, were present on Camille's clothing. However, this wasn't the only result discovered. Testing also showed that Floyd's father's DNA was also present on Camille's sock. The results suggested that Tom and Floyd's dad helped Tom dispose of the body. Police have made no new arrests to date.

Tom Bledsoe

Approximately one week after the Innocence Project announced the DNA testing results, Tom killed himself. He left a suicide note stating that he killed Camille and sent his innocent brother to jail. Their parents have admitted no wrongdoing and are refusing interviews.

Here's my entry to this;

Flying into magic

JUST WTH WITH THE STORY OF THE PARENTS AND THE BROTHERS... Who would send his innocent child to jail to protect the actual murder? Just WHO would be that much evil, I mean it, that is pure EVIL.

That is one hell of an evil family, now back to the OMG I WON 2COND PLACE, nice, OMG OMG OMG OMG, ok I'm relaxed now, Congratulations to the winners @zyzymena and @mrenglish for their wonderful works and big hug for all the participators, loved this week subject, "Dreams" oh no, erase that, is misdirection XD nice one

The stories get darker and the fact that it actually happened is tragic. The world is a must more horrid place than I realized. We literally live in bubbles that keep the madness from us...sometimes.

Both light and darkness are natural to mankind... The tragic is the unbalance among those. Madness is just a failure to cope with our lives

Sometimes, madness is just a failure to cope with our lives. Sometimes, someone is truly broken on the inside. Tom was such a person. He broke a long time ago, the world just doesn't know it because his parents either ignored it or caused it.

I'm both sad by tom and amazed he didn't go totally insane with such a family...

He definitely went off the deep end. I wish I knew more about the family to know for sure.

Wow! This is quite a good surprise. Thank you so much.

Thank you for the great article!

In everything we do we should always consider our love ones before we embark on it, because pushing them away and they found out, simple connote they mean nothing to us can be so hurting.

If any of the crime was properly investigated,I am so sure that innocent people will not go to prison.

Is true

Yes. I believe in most cases a very thorough investigation will reveal the truth. I don't know that it would have worked in this case. Tom's parents gave the police a solid alibi.

True. We always have to take at least our opinion of someone's position into consideration.

Nicely said 🤗

I was somehow misdirected by the title to believe that this week's words were betrayal and misdirection. Perhaps it was the story of Judas going on in my mind and the passion week. I don't even have to talk about betrayal. The word is only "misdirection".

https://peakd.com/hive-132410/@zyzymena/not-all-that-glitters-is-goldno-todo-lo-que-brilla-es-bueno

I finally made an entry. It was a bit tough coming up with a storyline for MISDIRECTION since I didn't want to tow the murder line again. I hope you enjoy reading this.

Wow... That's so tragic. If only the parents had gotten Tom some help instead of ignoring the issue, maybe he never would have committed murder.

Tom and Floyd lived in a family where the children worked to gain the favor and attention of their parents. Tom's father never admitted it, but he probably helped Tom dispose of Camille's body. Fortunately, there was a sliver of good within Tom because he couldn't keep the secret to himself. He ran to the police to confess.

However, his parent's probably convinced him to frame his brother Floyd. Tom was his parents' favorite son after all. They didn't mind getting rid of Floyd for the sake of the favorite.

Sacrificing one child for another is just messed up... Perhaps the one injustice that was never put at least attempted to be put right is that the parents walk away unpunished. Tom paid with his life. Floyd was set free. Camille's killer was brought into the light. But what about the parents...

Oh, yeah. There's something definitely odd about those parents. The fact that the dad had something to do with the victim speaks volumes. I'm just curious if the police ever hauled him in for questioning regarding his DNA.

I don't know, but he was probably an accessory to murder, so should have at least been questioned!

Wow.
Thanks a lot. You know I have forgotten that I took part in this contest.
Congratulations to all winners.

You're very welcome and well done in the contest.

Did not the rules say that it has to be on the pob community?

No, @samsmith1971 posted hers in The Inkwell last time :)

yes, @scholaris changed the rule a couple of months ago.

That used to be the rule but it was changed by @scholaris a couple of months ago.

Hello @jesustiano, @wrestlingdesires, and samsmith1971. I changed those rules some time ago. I wanted to expand the communities participating in the contest. Eventually, I would like to change the tag name to just #wotw. What do you think about that concept @calumam and @nonsowrites?

The only setback with that possibility is funding. It's why I haven't fully made the change yet.

I like keeping POB in the name. It's our roots after all ♥️

well, proofofbrain is quite porous now with a lot of other communities taking the spotlight in the proofofbrain community. It wasn't always that way but I guess change is constant. I like the exclusivity the contest once had but if we can attract more people to participate that will be great.

Why not i would say if i can take a shot at it, to be honest i don't see why not, the downside it could get, would be getting perhaps too much attention and grab too many contestants on one single round.

Parents should love their children fairly. Favoritism is not good in the family. Imagine 15 years of his life in prison but he never gets mad at them.

Thank you very much for responding. Floyd was angry in the beginning but the prisoners he met taught him about the folly of hate. He learned forgiveness not from his family, but instead from other condemned men.

Your welcome. Well, there is a saying "when you forgive you heal when you let go you grow".

Oh wow. That’s beautiful and such powerfully simple message

Hehehe thank you but you know sometimes it's easy to say the word forgive but it's hard to do. Well, it depends on the situation.

That's very true. It's not easy to forget and forgive...especially with parents like Floyd's.

connect with nature its very much important in human life..

I'm glad to see new winners and glad WOTW is still going on. I hope something good pops into my mind to add to this week's challenge.

You presented the story of Tom and Floyd really well, but the reality is so twisted. Covering everything up may seem like a good plan at the moment, but Tom still had a conscience. It's not clear if his dad did have a conscience. Looking at Floyd brought tears to my eyes.

No. It's not as twisted as others, but parents seems to be the focus of this week's contest updates from me. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient.

I eat fish and drink milk. It is spring here and the sunshine helps. I hope you are healthy.

My parents were not always very responsible people but they almost always told us the truth... except that one we were in the car and the cat "jumped" out the window.

Congrats @zyzymina on the awesome win, and also to @jesustiano (great to see you back writing as a dad now) and @mrenglish - result!!! and congrats to everyone else that took part.
