2024 1/4 oz British Gold Tudor Beasts Tudor Dragon Coin
One frequently sees the Beaufort Portcullis alongside the Tudor Dragon. Originally the emblem of the legitimate branch of the House of Lancaster known as the Beaufort family, the Beaufort Portcullis was created. After being embraced by King Henry VII's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, it gained significance as a Tudor emblem.
The Red Dragon of Wales is depicted on the reverse of the 2024 1/4 oz Gold Tudor Beast Tudor Dragon. The dragon is depicted here sitting and clutching a shield with its wings flexed. The Beaufort Portcullis, a symbol used by the House of Beaufort, is displayed on the shield.
The red dragon of Wales is a symbol of the Welsh nation and its struggle against the English. The dragon appears in an ancient story of Lludd and Llefelys, where it fights with a white dragon at Dinas Emrys. The story is later retold by Merlin, who reveals that the dragons represent the Britons and the Saxons. The dragon was used by Owain Glyndwr, a Welsh rebel leader, and later by the House of Tudor, a Welsh royal dynasty that ruled England.
