My fig has a single fruit!
Did I say fruit? Are figs fruits?
Not at all. Despite appearing to be a member of the fruit family due to their delicious flavor, figs are actually an inverted flower. The actual fruit of a fig is its seeds!
Perhaps you recognize them from the store-bought jam or cookies. I enjoy pairing it with blue cheese and spreading it on bruschetta. Or maybe you have a tree in your backyard that bears the pods. Ignore all you believe you know about them. Although people have been enjoying this flower—yes, I said flower—for tens of thousands of years, it is a true wonder of Mother Nature that the tree can yield such a delicious, jammy delight.
Although there are many different types, each with its own distinct appearance, flavor, and texture, some of the most popular ones are Brown Turkey figs also called Turkish Brown, like this one I am holding, which resemble Mission figs. Black Mission figs have an earthy flavor and are actually dark purple rather than black with a pink interior.
There are many ways to eat them, such as a nutritious snack to quench your sugar cravings, the ideal accompaniment to tangy cheese, in particularly, fig and arugula pizza, and the ideal garnish for sweet breads and homemade cakes.
