Hello hivers, an happy Monday to you all! This Monday is a very special Monday, because is the day to celebrate the Befana.
Here in Italy every child loves Befana who is (in our folklore) an old ugly woman similar to a witch who delivers cookies and candies to children who was food children. She use to deliver those little gifts on the Epiphany Eve day (during the night of the January 5) as the same way to Santa Claus.
In the old time, when my mom was a little child, people didn't know Santa Claus (here we call it Babbo Natale) and so there was the Befana who delivers gifts to children. At that time, the children received just a couple of candies and a couple of mandarin fruits (mandarins were really precious and good fruits here in the '50).
Now children use to receive a sock (or something similar) full of different candies so it's really a party for them.
In my family we use to meet all together with relatives (my uncles and my cousins with their family, around 40 people) every year for the lunch of the Befana Day and so I just come back after a really excellent dinner. Every year I give a little bag or a little sock for each little ones and this year the children between my relatives was 10.
The dinner with all the relatives was not to a restaurant, but we were all inside the home of my aunt Claudia who has a very large room where we can stay around a couple of large tables. She loves to cook and every year, with her hubby, she works hard to cook excellent food and she also write the menu!
After the dinner our bellies was really really full and so me and my hubby walked close to my aunt house, in a nice park:
Here in Italy we use to say "l'Epifania tutte le feste si porta via!" and the means is that with the 6th of January, the time of holidays is over! To be honest, after a lot of great dinners and lunchs, my belly is happy for the end of the holidays season. 😊
