On our second day in Ocumare de la Costa, Aragua state, we went again to Cata Bay, but not to stay there but to take a boat and go to the beach in front, Catica.
En nuestro segundo día en Ocumare de la Costa, estado Aragua, fuimos de nuevo a la Bahía de Cata, pero no para quedarnos allí, sino para tomar una lancha e ir a la playa de enfrente, Catica.
We got up early, the sun had not yet risen, we got everything ready and at about 7:30 am we left the inn and walked along the main street of El Playón looking for a place to have breakfast, of course some delicious fish empanadas. After lunch we went to the bus stop, we thought that since it was Saturday and more people come to town, there would be service, but none appeared and in order not to waste time we took a cab to Cata, as we did the day before.
Nos levantamos temprano, aún el sol no había salido, alistamos todo y como a las 7:30 am dejamos la posada y caminamos por la calle principal de El Playón buscando un lugar para desayunar, por supuesto unas ricas empanadas de pescado. Luego de comer fuimos a la parada de autobús, pensábamos que como era sábado y viene más gente al pueblo, habría servicio, pero no apareció ninguno y para no perder tiempo tomamos un taxi a Cata, como hicimos el día anterior.
In 10 minutes we were there, and although it was very early, the beach was already full of people. We bought some empanadas to take away and asked what the fare was to go to Catica, $5 per person, and immediately walked to the pier. We didn't have to wait, because with us, the boat that was about to leave filled up.
En 10 minutos estábamos allí, y aunque era muy temprano, la playa ya estaba llena de gente. Compramos unas empanadas para llevar y preguntamos cuál era la tarifa para ir a Catica, $5 por persona, e inmediatamente caminamos hacia el embarcadero. No tuvimos que esperar, porque con nosotras, la lancha que estaba por salir se llenó.
The trip to Catica is short, less than 10 minutes, and from the moment you get on the boat, the views are of great beauty: the bay of Cata, the mountains, the color of the water, the seabed, is the Caribbean and its colors.
El viaje hasta Catica es corto, menos de 10 minutos, y desde que te montas en la lancha, las vistas son de una gran belleza: la bahía de Cata, las montañas, el color del agua, el fondo marino, es el Caribe y sus colores.
As the boat pulls away from Cata, you see the dimensions of this bay and its exotic location, surrounded by the thick mountains of Henri Pittier National Park.
A medida que la lancha se aleja de Cata, vas viendo las dimensiones de esta bahía y su exótica ubicación, rodeada por las espesas montañas del Parque Nacional Henri Pittier.
The deep blue of the sea and the intense green of the mountains is a combination that I love in a landscape.
El azul profundo del mar y el intenso verde de las montañas, es una combinación que me encanta en un paisaje.
When we arrived at Catica beach there were few people, about 5-6 people, so we were able to choose the awning we wanted, there is no shade from coconut trees here like in Cata bay, so it is essential to have somewhere to get in because the sun is inclement. We didn't bring our own umbrella, so we rented the awning which includes a table and four chairs, it cost us $10.
Cuando llegamos a playa Catica había poca gente, como 5-6 personas, así que pudimos escoger el toldo que queríamos, aquí no hay sombra de cocoteros como en la bahía de Cata, por lo que es indispensable tener donde meterse porque el sol es inclemente. No llevamos sombrilla propia, entonces alquilamos el toldo que incluye una mesa y cuatro sillas, nos costó $10.
My friend Carol and I put ourselves first in an awning about halfway down the beach, but some people who were nearby and had a horn, put vallenato (Colombian music genre) and we decided to go to the other end, the last awning 😂, to hear the nature, the sea, anyway it was heard but not so much, fortunately a while later they lowered the volume.
Mi amiga Carol y yo nos pusimos primero en un toldo como a la mitad de la playa, pero unas personas que estaban cerca y tenían una corneta, pusieron vallenato (género musical colombiano) y decidimos irnos al otro extremo, al último toldo 😂, para poder escuchar la naturaleza, el mar, de todos modos se escuchaba pero no tanto, afortunadamente un rato después bajaron el volumen.
There were umbrellas for rent, closer to the shore, and the awnings made of bamboo and palm leaves in the back, where we sat.
Había sombrillas para alquilar, más cerca de la orilla, y los toldos hechos con bambú y hojas de palmeras en la parte de atrás, allí fue que nosotras nos sentamos.
As you can see in the pictures, the weather was perfect for a beach day, a blue sky with almost no clouds, and when we got into the water, the temperature was the same as in Cata bay, warm, but in Catica there is no swell and you can swim better, plus the seabed is more visible, I saw some small fish without the need of having a mask.
Como pueden ver en las fotos, el tiempo estaba perfecto para un día de playa, un cielo azul casi sin nubes, y cuando nos metimos en el agua, la temperatura era igual que en la bahía de Cata, cálida, pero en Catica no hay oleaje y puedes nadar mejor, además el fondo marino es más visible, vi algunos pequeños peces sin necesidad de tener una máscara.
Then I went for a walk from one end to the other, I was here once a few years ago, but I had taken few pictures, so this time I dedicated a few minutes to that. Catica is not extensive, I estimate that it must measure about 100 meters, but apart from the beach it has other attractions, such as the particular rock formations, the mountain, the vegetation, some views to the open sea, among other things.
Luego fui a caminar de un extremo a otro, estuve una vez aquí hace unos años, pero había hecho pocas fotos, así que esta vez dediqué unos minutos a eso. Catica no es extensa, calculo que debe medir como 100 metros, pero aparte de la playa tiene otros atractivos, como las particulares formaciones rocosas, la montaña, la vegetación, unas vistas al mar abierto, entre otras cosas.
I also found out that there is a trail up the mountain, from Cata Bay, through which you can get here walking, it is only about 2 km, next time I come I will find out where it starts to do this route.
También me enteré que hay un sendero por la montaña, desde la bahía de Cata, a través del cual puedes llegar aquí caminando, son apenas unos 2 Km, la próxima vez que venga averiguaré dónde empieza para hacer esta ruta.
Towards the right end of the beach, where there are more rock formations, there is a kind of altar with virgins on one of the stones.

I've always found religious statues a bit terrifying, and well, the condition these are in is scary, what do you think?

I continued my exploration of this area and climbed up the rocks to look at the landscape from there, on one side you see the expanse of Catica and Cata Bay in the distance, and on the other side the wild open sea, framed by the dark rocks and strong waves, an attractive contrast.
Seguí mi exploración por esta área y subí por las piedras para mirar el paisaje desde allí, por un lado ves la extensión de Catica y la bahía de Cata a lo lejos, y por el otro lado el salvaje mar abierto, enmarcado por las oscuras rocas y el fuerte oleaje, un atractivo contraste.
The sun was already scorching me, so I went back to the awning, my friend had ordered a 10-pack of beer and was quietly cooling off under the shade. I don't usually drink, but those beers were very cold and it provoked me, so I agreed to have one. We didn't have a bottle opener, but the guy who brought them showed us how to open one bottle with another, placing cap to cap and pulling upwards, I tried and was able to do it, my friend didn't make it, so I was in charge of uncorking them, well, skill unlocked! 😃
Ya el sol me estaba achicharrando, así que regresé al toldo, mi amiga había pedido un tobo con 10 cervezas y estaba refrescándose tranquilamente bajo la sombra. Yo no suelo tomar, pero esas cervezas estaban muy frías y me provocó, así que acepté tomarme una. No teníamos destapador, pero el chico que las trajo nos enseñó cómo abrir una botella con otra, colocando tapa con tapa y jalando hacia arriba, lo intenté y pude hacerlo, mi amiga no lo logró, entonces yo me encargué de destaparlas, bueno, ¡habilidad desbloqueada! 😃
I also ate the empanadas I bought before coming, one with fish and one with cheese, this one in the photo, with the holes on one side is the cheese one, the people who make them mark them in different ways so as not to make a mistake with the filling that each one has.
También me comí las empanadas que compré antes de venir, una de pescado y otra de queso, esta de la foto, con los huequitos en un lado es la de queso, los que las hacen las marcan de diferentes formas para no equivocarse con el relleno que tiene cada una.
While we were sitting there, several vendors passed by, handicrafts, ice cream, coconut sweets, temporary tattoos and some guys with their cava selling seafood and ceviche, we didn't buy anything but asked prices out of curiosity.
Mientras estuvimos sentadas allí, pasaron varios vendedores, artesanía, helados, dulces de coco, tatuajes temporales y unos chicos con su cava vendiendo mariscos y ceviche, no compramos nada pero preguntamos precios por curiosidad.
Also, just that Saturday, September 21, was World Beaches Day, and there were many environmental groups, hikers, etc., participating in the waste collection day that took place on beaches throughout Venezuela. At Catica beach they arrived by the mountain path, and they were carrying yellow bags where they were putting the garbage, fortunately there was almost no garbage there.
Además, justo ese sábado, 21 de septiembre, fue el Día Mundial de las Playas, y había muchos grupos ecologistas, senderistas, etc., participando de la jornada de recolección de desechos que se realizó en playas de toda Venezuela. A playa Catica llegaron por el sendero de la montaña, y cargaban unas bolsas amarillas donde iban metiendo la basura, afortunadamente allí casi no había.
It was time to leave this beach gem, as we arrived before 9:00 am, we had agreed with the boatman to pick us up at 2:00 pm.
Llegó la hora de irnos de esta gema playera, como llegamos antes de las 9:00 am, habíamos acordamos con el lanchero que nos buscara a las 2:00 pm.
Our day at the beach did not end there, we stayed at Cata Bay until 5:30 pm, it was very crowded, but we still enjoyed it, the water was divine and we had fun with the waves.
Nuestro día de playa no terminó ahí, nos quedamos en la bahía de Cata hasta las 5:30 pm, había muchísima gente, pero igual disfrutamos, el agua estaba divina y nos divertimos con las olas.
