Fall fungi photos

Found some more fall fungi to photography while waiting for the fall foliage.

Yellow

I think this beauty is an American yellow fly agaric, a variant of Amanita. Wikipedia info here ---> Amanita chrysoblema

Fall

Nice assortment of colors right now. The forest canopy is still almost all green but will soon start to display its fall colors. We were hiking in the Green Mountains in central Vermont.

Ant view

It got down to 45F last night so summer is fleeting. But this time of year is glorious 🙂 50s at night warming up to sunny 70s in the afternoon.

Long shot

I wasn't foraging but did find this lovely Hen of the Woods 😍 A good article on Hen of the Woods here ---> Forager Chef

Hen

Hen of the Woods can grow to be quite large. This cluster was already the size of a basketball. I may need to plan a return trip with my knife and foraging bag 🤔

Autumn colors are already settling in... and it's starting to get chilly in the mornings 😢 Bye summer...

I've never heard of Hen of the Wood, but if I were you, I'd go and pick it up. It doesn't look bad from the article you shared.

I think the hen might be a black staining polypore. Though it is mostly called hen of the woods too and tastes the same. Only difference is if you pinch a piece off it will eventually stain to a blackish brown color.

I was a little iffy on the ID and I didn't end up returning to harvest it 🙁 Good thing I didn't take my foraging friend on the long hike back only to be told "thats not Hen of the Woods" lol

I sort of like the taste of blackening polypore more than hen of the woods. Has more of a savory flavor but only subtly. The last hen I found was in Missouri and the last blackening polypore was in Wisconsin. Maybe things just taste better in Wisconsin.
