Empathy

The happy day came when she least expected. She was finally getting married, and it was the happiest day of her life. She called her friends to inform them that her man proposed, and then the screams of happiness filled the air even though there was a distance between her and her friends. Distance isn’t a barrier to sharing the good news.

The wedding plans started, and she was all over the place. Her friends had plans for whoever got married first among them. They were three girls. It was important that her two girls were there for her because even though she had other friends, these two people were very important to her, and their presence mattered more.

One of the friends was actively involved in the planning of the grande ceremonies (plural because it wasn’t a one-day wedding). For the traditional wedding, they travelled far east to celebrate because the elder of the family couldn’t travel to the city, so it was only respectful and ideal that they did that. Then, they did the church wedding after.

During the process of the planning and preparations, the third friend was nowhere to be found. However, that didn’t stop anything. The wedding went ahead as planned and it was the talk of the town, as expected.

The two friends who were together now had a blast at the wedding while talking about their third friend who was absent for a reason unknown to them. “She would’ve called even if anything happened”, one of them said. “I’m not surprised. Maybe she was not so happy for me afterall. Maybe the screams were just fake because why would she disappear suddenly like that without giving any notice or telling us why?”, the bride replied.

Well, the wedding happened without the third friend, and everyone was happy.

The third friend, two weeks after the wedding, called her two friends, but she realized that she had been blocked. Her call kept getting diverted. “What could’ve happened?”, she asked herself.

She tried again, but to no avail. She tried to reach them via their social media, but their accounts was nowhere to be found. Her WhatsApp messages were not delivering. “This is not right”, she murmured.

After a lot of efforts trying to get through to them with no success, she stopped trying. Then, one day, she got a call. “Hi, babe”. It was a man’s voice. “Hello”, she responded.

“This is Teejay, and I’ve been looking everywhere for you because I wondered why you were not at your friend’s wedding. I know how close you two were while in school, so I wondered what could’ve happened. I was so curious, that’s why I called”.

“Oh, thank you for calling”, she responded. I had some emergencies at the time, and I had no access to my phone, that’s why.

During the phone conversation, she asked Teejay if he had another line of her friend that she could call which she got, then she tried to reach her friend once again. But the moment the friend realized who was on the call, she hung up.

At this point, the third friend realized that it wasn’t a mistake that she was unable to reach either of her friends. She had been blocked.

The two other friends were angry because they thought their friend missed the wedding intentionally. What they didn’t know was that their friend was fighting for her life at the hospital. She was there with her family, praying fervently that God grants her another chance at life. They didn’t know how much they spent for her to be alive with them yet again, and they never cared to hear her out.

Sometimes, many things that we take to heart could be resolved only if we are ready to communicate effectively about it. Assuming or jumping to conclusions about a certain person, be it a friend, family, or colleague isn’t always a good thing. Hearing from them directly could help you control your anger and also learn how to handle their situation with so much grace.
