What’s the worst that can happen?

I have a friend whom we attended the same university. I liked him so much because he would cook a lot of meals and would ask me to do the organoleptic tests of the meals, especially the cakes. I love cakes, so why not?

He would try new recipes, and we would find out what he could do better next time. Our friendship was one that even I didn’t understand how it came to be, but soon I found out why we had to be together for that short time spent at the university.

I studied animal science, and Beejay studied crop science, but his side hustle in school was a career path he never saw himself explore. Beejay makes really nice meals, has a very good customer service, and he is very handsome, so he had the advantage of plenty girls patronising him, especially for their boyfriends’ birthday. One more thing is, he is very brilliant. He graduated with a first class.

When we finished school, he wanted to continue in the agronomy path, but he soon realized that he would rather explore food science and hotel management. He got jobs, but not on the farm. It was in a big restaurant where he was the head chef. All these, he did with so much excitement and at the back of his mind, he wanted to return to agronomy.

One day, he called me and said, “Monsuroh, I want to explore a new career path, but I’m scared. I will need to spend a lot of money and time exploring this new path, but what if it doesn’t work out for me? I’ll need to go back to school for a postgrad study of two years, meaning that I would waste time too, but you know, I’m not getting any younger. I’m so scared because I don’t know what might happen. What if it doesn’t work out?”

"Beejay, I know the future is bleak, but you know, there are decisions we just have to take in life even though we don’t know the outcome. The worst that can happen if you tour this new path is probably getting rejected, not getting a job in that path or even suffering some financial crisis, but one thing I know for certain is that you won’t regret the time you spent on yourself because along the line of trying something new, you would’ve learnt some new lessons that would help you in the journey of life, so, dear friend, please go for it. I’m rooting for you, always", I said.

He started the course, finished with distinction, and got a job immediately after about two months ago. The job isn’t just any job, but one that came with full perks. Accommodation, good payment, everything ease. I loveet.

Fear is part of what makes us human anyway, but it always creep into our lives when we are about to make big decisions like getting married, applying for a job, applying for a scholarship, and even as little as starting or ending a relationship, but what I do in this situations is ask myself, what the worst outcome could be and prepare for all the possibilities.

That way, whatever the outcome is will be bearable for me even though I may cry or be sad, I won’t cry for too long while letting another opportunity pass me by. I will cry, pick myself up, and then refire asking myself over and again, what the worst possible outcome could be.

Fear is an enemy that doesn't want us to take that new step. It haunts us when we give in to it but when we try to confront it with courage, though, we might fail along the line, we still feel good walking that path and learning something new. In the end, it is the experience gathered that counts which could lead us onto something new.

You're very correct. At the most, the worst that can happen is we fall or fail, but the interesting part is we pick ourselves up once again, and we try again, but this time, with the lessons learnt from our last approach.

Thank you for reading through, sis.

Exactly. We don't fall and end it there. We've to pick up ourselves and keep going. You're welcome 😊

Sometimes we just take the leap of faith without overthinking things as overthink will only slow us down. Your friend is lucky to have you as a guide on his next phase of life.

That leap of faith is what we all need at every point of our lives when we are scared of the unknown.

Thank you very much, ma'am.

You are welcome 🤗
