Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!
The Problematic CVT!
So another job for a client that thinks he is smart! I suppose he is smart, I suppose!
Now this is his own transmission... we test drove the car and there was a very bad slippage on the transmission... that much is clear from the condition of the oil... The problem with these is that it has both a clutch that can slip and a variator that can slip... By the looks of this one it might be both.
Let's dive in and see!
It Smells Like Burnt!
Heck yeah this is of a hectic condition! There's not a lot of metal in it but there is a lot of clutch material!
The Differential Side.
Okay so there is a bit of luck in this one... Well not really xD!
At the very least he doesn't appear to have any gunks in the differential side, the oil seems to be okay as you can see it still has that goldeny golden! But the differential side is the least of his worries for now.
Let's dig a little deeper now!
It Looks Complicated Right?
Well it is a little... Funny to think that this is my first time on the tear down with this transmission... Honestly I think I did a pretty decent job though.. Didn't break anything! Well thus far!
Now to get all those variators out of place!
The First Problem.
Now the first problem I noticed here after the bad oil was the variators that are badly scored... now this can be a bit of a problem for the client.
These costs a big penny to replace a really big penny! One that might cripple the man, I'm almost certain that he wont be replacing these!
Might be we can polish this off and have it looking nice again!
Maybe, but first let's check something else out!
A Second Transmission!
Okay so the client might be in a bit of luck... He brought a second hand transmission... But the codes don't even match on them.... Laughs what trickery is this?
From what we can see the one is from an Audi A5 and the other from a Audi A4... I doubt that the parts would be interchangeable! I highly doubt it!
But let's do the teardown and see what we can find on these! After all we don't work for free!
The Second Transmission.
Okay so here's the thing.... The second transmission that he brought does look fairly good on the variators... I'm not too concerned with those spots on the variator, those will polish out fairly easy and from the looks of it it just stood a long time like that.
A few other things to point out though!
Stripped Gear On The Clutch!
Okay so this might not actually be a problem but the gear on this clutch setup is stripped... Not the actual gear itself but more underneath it, it's not binding to the entire shaft setup anymore... this means it has already broken... He brought us a broken transmission! Laughs this isn't going to work!
Not by a long shot! Where is the next problem?
We Have A Major Problem Now!
Okay so... here's the deal... Remember when I said that these aren't the same transmissions even though they do look the same, might look the same but internally they aren't.
Anyways, it's a completely different set up! Completely, the ratios are off by a long shot and the variators and cones don't even look the same at all! So this was a waste of time and a waste of money on the clients side.
Should have rather listened to us and he would have had it done by now!
Also Buggered!
Now we already know this ain't going to work but take a look at the chain... it's completely worn out, this will be a sliding problem all the way! Wont even get out of the line with this one folks!
We shall hear what the client has to say on the Monday! He is probably going to say this is our fault!
