Some Nice Silver from Turkey

in #hive-1368198 days ago

Happy Monday everyone! I realized this morning that's it's been awhile since I did a silver coin post and it feels like a great day to share one. Silver prices have been on the rise along with most precious metals over the last several days. All the instability in the world is playing part of it, what a mess...

I haven't bought any new silver items in quite awhile now. My usual haunts to track down nice items at discount prices haven't had anything worth buying on my last few visits. It seems like people are just hanging onto their precious metals with the prices on the rise. I have a feeling this trend may continue and I may have to start paying more if I want to buy more silver or gold!

This morning I dug back to some older items I have photographed and then have stored away. At one point I had documented a lot of my silver and gold items for insurance reasons, but that need vanished when I switched companies quite some time ago. Today's coin is interesting because it's the only one I have from this particular nation. I got this coin from trading another coin that I didn't care much about, and got two coins in return. I wasn't really interested in this coin but the other coin that came with it was nice, so I accepted. I'm glad I did, this is a pretty cool coin.

Here is a ten Lira coin silver coin from Turkey:

About the coin:

Although not in perfect condition it's a nice coin. It contains 83% silver which is really the most important aspect in my eyes. There were four million produced so it's not very rare, but it was a commemorative coin issue which makes it's more interesting. And it is the only item I own from the nation of Turkey! Over the years I just haven't ever seen many Turkish coins.

Turkey

Turkey has been a place I've always wanted to visit but never been able to make it happen. It is a country with so much human history that it would be a fascinating place to visit. They have some incredible archeological sites and the ruins of the once Roman stronghold of Constantinople. They also have some ancient sites dating back to 9600 BCE before recorded history, at least history as we now know it.

Once we get to recorded history first there were the Greeks in charge after Alexander the Great rolled through. Then eventually the Romans took control. The Emperor Constantine moved the center of the Holy Roman Empire to Constantinople (modern day Istanbul.) Among the great building that were built in the era include the Hagia Sophia that was built as a cathedral but converted to a mosque under the Ottomans.

Wikipedia

It's a beautiful building, completed in 537 A.D.

The Ottoman's captured Constantinople in 1453 under Mehmed II and the name then was changed to Istanbul. It remained under Ottoman rule until World War One. Under the leadership of general Mustafa Kemal Pasha the Turkish Nationalist movement gained independence in the Turkish War of Independence ending in 1923. The reason this is important is because the fellow you see on the coin today is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Mustafa Kemal Pasha) whose surname was changed and he became the first president of the Republic of Turkey.

Now you may wonder about the date on the coin, May 27, 1960. There was a coup d'état on that date often referred to as the 27th May Revolution. Now we're caught up to date on the coin! There were three more coups in following years, but you can read more about them in the Wikipedia link I have included under references.

I have done my best to give you a very brief history leading to the coin I shared today. I did my best to keep it factual and if I missed some important history I apologize!

I do hope you enjoyed my post today. Today I learned that I knew very little about Turkish history, but I hope you liked the coin. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. I want to thank everyone for all of your support, it really is truly appreciated. Have a great week!

Sweet one!! I don't have any coin from Turkey, but I just got a silver bar from Nadir mint hehehe

Pretty cool! I haven't seen many Turkish coins over the years. I bet you would in Europe but on our side of the pond they're harder to find!

Today in the morning I was listening to the news that although the BTC fell by 2.8%, this did not happen with GOLD, on the contrary, Gold went up, silver went up by 1.3%.

I really like this hobby of collecting coins, and if they are silver they are even better.

That's why it' s smart to own precious metals. I love crypto but right now the metals are where you will see the biggest gains with potential World War three looming...

We used to have silver coins too but soon the price of silver was higher than the nominal value of the coin it was no longer practical to use silver in coins. I used to collect 1 peso coins with some silver content in them.

Just like most countries silver just got too expensive to be in coins, same here in the US after 1964. Before most coins were silver, now none unless they are special mint sets not for circulation. It's always smart to collect coins with silver!

I always thought Turkey would be a cool place to visit but I feel like it is far too dangerous for Americans these days. I think I am going to end up paying spot price for most of my silver when I buy it. I have waited so long I likely won't have time to hunt for bargains.

I agree, it's just too dangerous for American right now. The sad part is they are a member of NATO, you would hope safety wouldn't be an issue. I also always wanted to go to Petra, in Jordan. That one is much safer for Americans, but anywhere in the region has it's risks. I never minded being in the green zone in Iraq because it was very safe even though we were at war, but these days as a civilian the middle east would just make me too nervous to visit...

After the election there may be some buying opportunities, at least I'm hoping!

Yeah, it's sad. So many cool places we may never get to see if the world continues to go down this path. I'd be down for some buying opportunities!

I have a feeling this trend may continue and I may have to start paying more if I want to buy more silver or gold!

You're not the only one, and most dilly-dally because they are used to buying low. You can wait until the elections are over! It's just a couple of weeks out!

That's a pretty coin, and I think I have one exactly like that. I remember because it's my only coin from Turkey!

I hope we see people selling more, my favorite jewelry shop to pick up silver has only had jewelry sold to him as of late, no decent coins. I've gotten spoiled picking stuff up at spot!

You are one of the few people besides myself who have a Turkish coin, I haven't ever come across another one in all my years of collecting...

Very unique 10 lira coin from Turkey, my friend!👍😊
I don’t think I have seen this Coin before….
Very nice!👍

I've never come across any others, it might be that they never were of much interest here so they stayed on the other side of the pond... Thanks!

Hmmm…. that could be….
very unique Coin!😊

Last night, I heard President Trump say that we are going to "END" inflation... You know what that means... We're returning to a "Stable" Monetary System... I figure we will be backing our Paper, Electronic and Common Coinage with Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium "Coins"..
