Battle tips: The basics

To climb the ranks in splinterlands, one needs to win battles, and to win battles, there are important things to understand. The basics should never be underestimated. I will be sharing the important things that need to be understood in order to have a good strategy because that would win you games. This would especially be beneficial to newbies.

Most cards in splinterlands have at least 1 attack type. It could be melee attack, ranged attack or magic attack. Some cards even have two attack types at a time, while some other cards have no attack at all. Knowing the attack type a card has is crucial to knowing where to place that card in battle. If this part is gotten wrong, that battle is as good as lost.

Melee attack cards are perfect for close up attacks. They only attack from the first position in battle because that's the position closest to the enemy units.

Such cards cannot directly attack enemy units that are far away, just like it also cannot attack enemy units from a far position. As a result, putting a melee attack card in a position other than the first makes it useless in most cases because it won't be able to contribute to your attack. It will just remaining in battle, receiving damages until it gets eliminated.

However, sometimes people could put a melee attack card in the second position because they anticipate that when the one in the first position dies, the second card automatically goes to occupy that first position. Also, some melee attack cards have special abilities that let them attack any opponent from any position they occupy. These are the exceptions.

Picking the right card for the first position is important because it is usually the card that comes under fire the most when battle starts. So it is important to pick a card that has a high health stat and some armor as well. This would ensure that it can withstand those attacks for longer and while also causing trouble for the opponent. In addition, it is important to have cards with higher attack power as this will help deplete the health of enemy units faster.

Ranged attack cards are for distant attacks.

They attack enemy units far away and they attack from a far position in battle. What this means is that a card with ranged attack will not be effective in the first position in battle. This is because the first position requires close up attack which is not what they are for.

So they are fit for every other position, except the first. Personally, I prefer my ranged attack cards at the last position and the other positions closest to the last. This is because as each unit in the first position dies, the next unit enters that position. So before my ranged attack card gets to the first position where it will be ineffective, it must have caused enough damage for the opponent or I might have already won the battle.

However, some ranged attack cards have special abilities that let them attack enemy units from any position. Again, these are the exceptions.

Magic attack cards are special. I noticed that they are the favorites of a lot of players. Magic attack cards can occupy any position in battle, from the first to the last; and they would be effective.

One special thing about this category of cards is that they bypass armor and directly attack the health of enemy units, meanwhile, ranged and melee attacks have to deplete armor first before affecting health.

Sometimes I put magic attack cards in the first position if it has enough health and armor to withstand attacks for long. Furthermore, such cards with high attack power are very effective in winning battles.

I believe with this article, someone new to splinterlands can understand how arrange their line up, taking advantage of the strengths of each card to give maximum effect.
