Prelude
Hi all, hope all is well for you. I am so glad that the developers have released the Community Engagement Challenge, this will allow players to look deep into the reward cards from the recently released Rebellion Soul Bound cards. I do not have a large collection of them yet so I will be sharing based on the little collection that I have thus far. And with that, I will also need to step up on the Glint accumulation to gather more of the Rebellion Soul Bound Reward Cards.
Card To Look at Today
Mar Toren Trader
Card Attributes
Rarity: Common
Splinter: Water
Attack Type: Range
Abilities
Card gain headwinds at level 4 which will debuff all opponent range attackers.
Next ability to gain will be heal at final level which I think will further improve its survivability.
Overall assessment of ability, not too bad for a common card as these ability do have great utility.
Stat Growth
Attack: Stagnant 2 range attack from level 1 all the way till max.
Speed: Gains 1 speed at level 5 and another at level 7
Armour: No armour throughout
Health: Steadily increasing from 2 all the way to 7 every few levels.
Overall assessment of stat growth is that 2 attack for a 3 mana card is already very decent and should not be seeing more of it and on the other stats, while there is no armour throughout, the speed and health gain does improve its survivability.
This is the first portion of the review base on stat line and abilities. Now I will put this card up to the test and see how it fare in battle before wrapping up the review based on the battle and finally an overall assessment of this card.

Ruleset
What Doesn't Kill You
Mana Limit: 20
Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
---|---|---|---|
Kelya Frendul | 4 | Summoner | Ever reliable water summoner that give additional 1 armour and 1 speed which is very essential in most ruleset |
Venari Marksrat | 3 | 1st | The bait to let opponent hit and boost up the stats of the card adjacent to it |
Djinn Oshannus | 8 | 2nd | My favourite card in the game. This card see me through so many battles. A good and meaty magic attacker with fast speed and void |
Mar Toren Trader | 3 | 3rd | New card in collection. Testing out for the first time, let's see how it do. For me, I selected this because of the low mana requirement with high damage output |
Igor Darkspear | 2 | 4th | Another low mana range attacker that I choose which I think should be able to do well in the match |
Torrent Fiend | 0 | 5th | Backline padding in case of any sneak attackers coming from the back and tear up my lineup. |
Total Mana: | 20 |
Opponent Lineup
- Summoner - Kelya Frendul
- Position 1 - Halfling Refugee
- Position 2 - Hardy Stonefish
- Position 3 - Torrent Fiend
- Position 4 - Djinn Oshannus
- Position 5 - Riverboat Captain
- Position 6 - NA
Prediction before pressing rumble
Both of us used Water Splinter base but a rather different set of lineup with my opponent using an interesting epic Rebellion Soul Bound card while I use Mar Toren Trader. Opponent also utilized a more magic based lineup compared to mine which is range based.
Two different way of playing this matchup, strategy deployed and fielding our lineup. Which strategy works? There can only be one way to find out.
Let's battle!
Battle Synopsis
Round 1, Game on, only 1 casualty this round where my Marksrat fell to a zap from opponent Oshannus. Otherwise no other cards fell but a number of cards went into enraged mode.
Round 2, Another seemingly uneventful round with just me taking out Halfing Refugee. Oshannus managed to dodge Riverboat Captain's attack to prevent further blast into my backline.
Round 3, My cards combined and clear out the 2 padding with Mar Toren Trader landing a kill which is really nice.
Round 4, The battle continues asi it is between the 2 Oshannus and how the backline can add in more value. Against a much faster Oshannus, Mar Toren Trader missed and now is in danger due to blast from Riverboat Captain.
Round 5 and 6, this two rounds saw further misses from Mar Toren Trader and it fell to the hands of Riverboat Captain in round 6.
Round 7 and 8, again misses and misses continue. And finally in round 8, opponent's Oshannus is finally taken down.
Round 9 and 10 went on with the disposal of the remaining Riverboat Captain. Finally match has been won!
Post Battle Summary
The match was more or less determined by how each side able to get value out of Oshannus and clear off any obstacles be it in front or behind of it. When able to do so, the victor of the match is defined.
Battle Assessment of Mar Toren Trader
Limelight was stolen by Oshannus, but there are moments that saw some glimpse of what this card is capable of where we saw the damage she can inflict which is rather substantial. Unfortunately due to facing a fast card Oshannus, like many other slower cards, the outcome is always missing hits. Otherwise, if facing other cards, she should have no major issues landing hits.
Overall Assessent
Being low mana, it can easily fit into many lineup and will do well in Little League. I like it that it is giving 2 damage on its hits which is a great value for a low mana card.
On growth it will become better with the headwinds to bring disadvantage to opponent. My assessment will be that this is a very value card that one can have. A good addition and should be very easily obtained. Might not be game changing like many higher rarity cards but it does give good contribution accordingly.
If I am to give a score, Mar Toren Trader gets a 2.8 out of 5 stars.
