Own a dog or a cat - Which would you choose and why?
From the title itself, you should be able to tell what is my selection.
The Choice Is Clear
It might be a tough question for many but actually it is very clear for me. Though I may not own a single living cat in my house at this moment, I have been contemplating the thought of owning for quite some time.
From the number of cats that I have in my house, you would know how much I love cats. Let me show you the number of "cats" I have at home.
As you can see, my house is filled with cats. Both my wife and I love cats and plan to keep one in the future. Breed wise, we are still deciding between Scottish Fold or British Shorthair.
Owning A Cat
While dogs do stick around their owners and looked way more loyal than cats, there are quite a number of factors that made me want to keep cat as pets.
Cats Are Ok Being Indoors
This is one of the biggest factor that I choose to own a cat. My work schedule can be a little erratic and hence to be able to find time to bring the dog out for walks is a challenge. Sometimes when I reach home, all I just want to do is just have a shower and then crash on bed. Imagine when I am really tired, it will be tough to gather energy to drag myself out of my house and bring a dog out for walk.
Animal Sound Volume
Cats are generally quieter than dogs. I have personally experienced this as my neighour whom owns a dog, whenever strangers that walk past the house, there will be a good 5-10 mins of loud parking which is really very irritating to the neighbour. And this will bring an unpleasant experience to my guest whom visit my place. Because when they arrive at my door step, there is alot of barking. And with the global work trend towards working from home, animal sound volume will be a very important consideration.
Cleanliness And Maintenance
Cats hands down beat dogs in this category, with an instintc to bury the pee and poop. They also do self cleaning which is really something good. Imagine keeping dog active and all, not only one has to spend additional time on walking the god, there is also a need to the need to clear off their pee and poop during the daily walks. I rarely see a cat that is unclean but tendency to have dogs in an unclean state is more common.
Personal Space Management
While to some, after a long day at work when you open your home door, your pet comes to greet you is a really nice experience. But, it doesn't end there, what your pet dog actually want is for you to bring it out for a game of fetch. Cats on the other hand requires less attention and allow you to get yourself recharged after a long day. Your pet cat will most probably sitting at its favourite spot taking a nap of its own.
Cost
The most practical factor of why I prefer to keep cats is cost. The price of getting a cat is much cheaper as compared to that of getting a dog. The maintenance and upkeep cost of keeping a cat is much lower as well due to the volume of food they eat is of smaller quantities as compared to dog and also the cost of buying toys/accessories somehow when I visit pet expo, they are cheaper for cats. So on top of all the physical and psychological considerations, the hard truth of the dollars also speaks loudly.
Closing
I think no matter what our preferences are, there will also be difference in preference between individuals. But no matter what we choose, we need to be responsible owners and take good care of our pets. I do hope I can find the pet cat that I desire soon and I hope pet owners have a good time with your pets as well.
