Hello, this is my first post in this community since I opened my account in Hive a few weeks ago, today I would like to share an emotional moment for me, and it is the day I went with my family to the countryside, and I had the opportunity to visit again and after so many years, the tobacco factory in which I worked during my adolescence, It was a strange but unforgettable and fascinating experience because although it is abandoned, it still conserved all the working implements, the tractors, the machines and even a tobacco plant that has been preserved over the years as a reminder of what this place once was.
Hola, este es mi primer post en esta comunidad desde que abrí mi cuenta en Hive hace unas cuantas semanas, hoy quisiera compartir un momento emotivo para mi, y es el día en que fui con mi familia al campo, y tuve la oportunidad de visitar nuevamente y luego de tantos años, la fábrica de tabaco en la cual trabajé durante la adolescencia, fue una experiencia un poco extraña pero inolvidable y fascinante porque a pesar de que está abandonada aún conservaba todos los implementos de trabajo, los tractores, las máquinas e incluso quedó una planta de tabaco que han conservado con el paso de los años como recordatorio de lo que alguna vez fue este lugar.
I went to visit the farm where my cousin lives and he now holds the keys to the old tobacco production factory where we worked in our youth because he and other farm workers have dedicated themselves to taking care of the area as well as cultivating the land and tending the cattle. I like that farm because it is big and the place is peaceful, you can breathe fresh air and feel a lot of peace, but as we walked along the road I was excited because I haven't seen the factory since I was about 17 years old.
Fui a visitar la finca donde vive mi primo y él ahora conserva las llaves de la vieja fábrica de producción de tabaco donde trabajamos en la juventud porque él junto con otros trabajadores agrícolas se ha dedicado a cuidar de esa zona además de cultivar la tierra y cuidar el ganado. Me gusta esa finca porque es grande y el lugar es apacible, se puede respirar aire fresco y se siente mucha paz, pero a medida que avanzábamos por el camino yo estaba emocionado porque no veía la fábrica desde que tenía unos 17 años.
When we arrived I was surprised to see that it looked exactly as I remembered it, the same green barred gate, everything was the same, although obviously the passage of time had blackened the walls.
Cuando llegamos me sorprendió ver que se veía exactamente como yo la recordaba, el mismo portón de rejas verde, todo era igual, aunque obviamente se nota el paso de los años ha ido ennegreciendo las paredes.
Inside everything was almost intact, according to what my cousin tells me, many of the old workers who look after the area have taken care of the factory, I suppose they have done some maintenance because otherwise it would have collapsed long ago, but everything was the same, even the wagons that were hooked to the tractors were still there, in these wagons the tobacco leaves arrived directly from the plantation behind the factory, and at that time our job was to select the leaves according to size and quality.
Por dentro todo estaba casi intacto, según me cuenta mi primo, muchos de los antiguos trabajadores que cuidan de la zona han cuidado de la fábrica, supongo que le han hecho algo de mantenimiento porque de lo contrario se hubiese derrumbado hace mucho, pero todo estaba igual, incluso estaban allí todavía los vagones que se enganchaban a los tractores, en estos vagones llegaban las hojas de tabaco directamente de la plantación que estaba detrás de la fábrica, y en esa época nuestro trabajo era seleccionar las hojas según el tamaño y la calidad.
I can't deny that I was overcome with nostalgia when I remembered that time, I was a teenager, so I had a lot of fun with my friends and my cousins (who worked with me) during our working day, my cousin was in charge of going to town to get the food that our mothers must have already prepared at that time.
No puedo negar que me embargó la nostalgia al recordar esa época, yo era un adolescente, así que me divertía mucho con mis amigos y mis primos (que trabajaban conmigo) durante nuestra jornada, mi primo era el encargado de ir al pueblo a buscar la comida que nuestras madres ya debían tener preparada a esa hora.
I began to explain to my daughter the whole process of the preparation of the leaves for the production of tobacco, these leaves, duly treated, were sold to the transnational company Bigott.
Yo empecé a explicarle a mi hija todo el proceso de la preparación de las hojas para la producción del tabaco, estas hojas, debidamente tratadas se vendían a la empresa trasnacional Bigott
I couldn't help myself, so I asked my cousin to see the drying rooms for the leaves, which were also called curing rooms. In these rooms we would arrange the leaves on long sticks about five metres long called Cujes, and we would place them from the bottom to the top, and when they had been there for some time we would change their position, and the ones that were on top would go to the bottom. Above, on the roof of the room, as you can see, is the ventilation window.
Yo no pude contenerme, así que le pedí a mi primo ver las salas de secado de las hojas, que también llamaban salas de curado. En estas salas nosotros acomodábamos las hojas en unas varas largas de unos cinco metros de largo que se llamaban Cujes, y las íbamos ubicando de abajo hacia arriba, y cuando ya tenían cierto tiempo las cambiábamos de posición, las que estaban arriba pasaban abajo. Arriba, en el techo de la sala, como pueden ver está la ventana de ventilación.
In this room there were several cookers that raised the temperature of the place and therefore the leaves were drying, but the windows that were at ground level prevented the temperature from rising too high. When the leaves had reached the right level of drying, a lever was operated to open the upper windows, thus cooling the room.
En esta sala había varias hornillas que elevaban la temperatura del lugar y por ende las hojas se iban secando, sin embargo las ventanas que estaban al nivel del suelo evitaban que la temperatura subiera demasiado. Cuando ya las hojas habían alcanzado el nivel de secado adecuado, se accionaba una palanca que abría las ventanas superiores, de esta forma se refrescaba la habitación
We really had a nice time that day, my cousin and I reminiscing about old times while we explained to my family the whole process that I just explained to you, seeing that the whole place was almost intact made a pleasant impact on me, but I was even more shocked by what we found afterwards and what I will show you next.
De verdad que pasamos un agradable momento ese día, mi primo y yo recordando viejos tiempos mientras le explicábamos a mi familia todo el proceso que yo acabo de explicar para ustedes, ver que todo ese lugar estaba casi intacto me impactó gratamente, pero más me impactó lo que encontramos después y que les mostraré a continuación.
The tobacco plantation was behind the factory and was obviously very vast, but after the factory closed and the production was finished they obviously did not grow tobacco anymore, on that land nowadays they grow parchitas (passion fruit) cassava, aubergine and other products, however a single tobacco plant is still preserved as a reminder of what was once done in this place.
La plantación de tabaco estaba detrás de la fábrica y obviamente era muy vasta, pero luego que la fábrica cerró y se terminó la producción obviamente ya no cultivaban tabaco, en esas tierras hoy en día se cultivan parchitas (fruta de la pasión) yuca, berenjena y otros productos, sin embargo todavía se conserva una única planta de tabaco como recordatorio de lo que alguna vez se hizo en este lugar.
