As I mentioned in my travel posts last year, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. My second choice for an abroad vacation this year was Greece again. I will write about Centre and Beach of Petra in the seventh part of my Lesbos island travel post series.

Geçen seneki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki ikinci yurtdışı seyahat tercihim yine Yunanistan oldu. Lesbos adası gezi yazısı serimin yedinci bölümünde sizlere Petra’nın Şehir Merkezi’nden ve Plajı’ndan bahsedeceğim.
After resting at a cafe in Molivos, we set off towards Petra, which is six kilometers away from Molivos. We arrived in Petra in about 20 minutes. We parked the car in a fine place and started walking from the beach to the center of Petra. Although the beach is long and big, it is quite calm and not crowded. There are cafes, taverns and guesthouses on both sides of the coast road. I can say that the prices for food and drinks are not very high. The sea was quite wavy because it was windy. They say that Petra is similar to Izmir’s Foça. After all, this is the other side of the Aegean, how different it be would be : )
Molivos’ta bir kafede dinlendikten sonra Molivos’a altı kilometer uzaklıkta bulunan Petra’ya doğru yola çıktık. Yaklaşık 20 dakika sonra Petra’ya varmıştık. Arabayı uygun bir yere park ettikten Petra’nın sahilinden merkezine doğru yürümeye başladık. Plaj uzun ve büyük olmasına rağmen oldukça sakin, kalabalık yok. Sahil yolu boyunca sağlı sollu kafe-tavernalar ve pansiyonlar var. Yiyecek ve içecek fiyatlar çok yüksek değil diyebilirim. Hava rüzgarlı olduğu için deniz oldukca dalgalıydı. Petra’yı İzmir Foça’ya benzetiyorlarmış. Zaten burası Ege’nin diğer yakası, ne kadar farklı olabilirdi ki : )
Walking for about two kilometers, we arrived at the center of Petra. We returned to the bazaar of Petra and continued our walk. There are small souvenir shops in the narrow streets behind the taverns. The upper part of the bazaar is covered with ivy and tree branches like that of Molivos. This place gives the impression of an authentic bazaar. Although it was a weekday and siesta time, the bazaar was quite crowded. For sure, you can guess the reason for the crowd: Turkish tourists : ) It was two in the afternoon and we were very hungry. This authentic bazaar was a great opportunity to have lunch. We sat in a tavern, had lunch and rested.
Yaklaşık iki kilometre yürüdükten sonra Petra’nın merkezine vardık. Petra’nın çarşısına dönüp yürüyüşümüze devam ettik. Tavernaların arkasında kalan dar sokakların içinde küçük hediyelik dükkanlar var. Çarşının üst tarafı, Molivos Çarşısı gibi sarmaşık ve ağaç dallarıyla kapanmış. Burası da insane otantik bir çarşı havası veriyor. Haftaiçi ve siesta saati olmasına karşın çarşı oldukça kalabalıktı. Tabi ki kalabalığın sebebini tahmin edebilirsiniz: Türk turistler : ) Saat öğleden sonra iki olmuştu ve iyice acıkmıştık. Bu otantik çarşı, öğle yemeği yemek için oldukça güzel bir fırsattı. Bir tavernada oturduk hem öğle yemeği yedik hem de dinlendik.
After eating lunch, we started walking towards the back streets of Petra. As we walked through the quiet back streets of Petra, we came across old, colorful detached houses with fruit trees and flowers in their gardens. I can say that these places are perfect for relaxing. There are also mansions from the Ottoman Empire period on these streets. Even, one of them was bought and turned it into a museum. There was an entrance fee; to be honest, why they did something like this didn’t make much sense to me.
Öğle yemedğini yedikten sonra Petra’nın arka sokaklarına doğru yürümeye başladık. Petra’nın sessiz arka sokaklarında dolaşırken eski, bahçesinde meyve ağaçları ve çiceklerin olduğu, rengarenk müstakil evlerle karşılaşıyoruz. Buralar kafa dinlemek için birebir diyebilirim. Bu sokaklarda Osmanlı Devleti zamanından kalmak konaklar da var. Hatta, bir tanesi satın alınmış ve müzeye çevrilmiş. Giriş ücretliydi, neden böyle bir şey yapmışlar bana pek mantıklı gelmedi açıkcası.
We continued our walk through the peaceful back streets of Petra. We came across a very old chapel. This is the Chapel of St. Nicholas, believed to be the protector of the seas in Greece. In America and Northern European countries, he is known as Santa Claus, or Father Christmas. We toured the interior and exterior of the chapel. The structure of the chapel and the depictions inside showed that it was quite old. According to the information at the entrance, it was built in the 16th century. Very close to the chapel there is the Monastery of the Virgin Mary (Panagia Glikofilusa), which can be reached by a staircase of 114 steps. We were tired by then, thus when we heard about the 114 steps, we gave up on seeing it : ) But now I wish we had seen it.
Petra’nın huzur veren arka sokaklarında yürüyüşe devam ettik. Karşımaza oldukça eski bir şapel çıktı. Burası Aziz Nikolaos Şapeli, Yunanistan’da denizlerin koruyucu olduğuna inanılmaktadır. Amerika ve Kuzey Avrupa ülkelerinde ise Santa Klaus, yani Noel Baba olarak tanınmaktadır. Şapel’in iç ve dış tarafını gezdik. Şapel’in yapısı ve içindeki tasvirler oldukça eski olduğunu gösteriyordu. Girişteki bilgilere göre 16. Yüzyılda yapılmış. Şapel’e çok yakın bir konumda olan 114 basamaklı merdivenle çıkılan Meryemana Manastırı (Panagia Glikofilusa) bulunmaktadır. Artık yorgun olduğumuz için 114 basamağı duyunca orayı görmekten vazgeçtik : ) Ama şimdi keşke görseydik diyorum.
Having visited the chapel, we went back to the center of Petra and then back along the coast to where we left the car. It was time to return to Turkiye. We had a ferry at around 6pm. We arrived in the center of Midilli at around 5pm and delivered the rental car. After customs procedures, we took the ferry to Ayvalık and then back to Istanbul. We had been on the island of Lesbos for two days, but we saw so much that it felt like we had been there for a week, and I am sure there are many beautiful places we have not seen yet. The places I liked the most were the authentic bazaars of Molivos and Petra. I also really liked the narrow, stone-paved streets and the houses made of stone and wood, surrounded by many flowers and trees in these two towns.
Şapel’i ziyaret ettikten sonra tekrar Petra merkeze ve daha sonra sahilden geri dönerek arabayı bıraktığımız yere gittik. Artık Türkiye’ye dönüş zamanı gelmişti. Akşam saat altı gibi feribotumuz vardı. Saat beş gibi Midilli merkeze vardık ve kiralık arabayı teslim ettik. Gümrük işlemlerinden sonra feribota binerek önce Ayvalık’a, daha sonra da İstanbul’a geri döndük. Lesbos adasında iki gün bulunmuştuk ama o kadar yer gördük ki sanki bir haftadır oradaydık ve eminim ki daha göremediğimiz çok güzel yerler de var. Benim en çok hoşuma giden yerler Molivos’un ve Petra’nın otantik çarşıları oldu. Ayrıca bu iki kasabada bulunan dar, taş döşeli sokaklar ve yine taştan ve tahtadan yapılmış, etrafı birçok çiçek ve ağaçla çevrilmiş evler çok hoşuma gitti.
