In this shot of the German city of Frankfurt, I tried to capture the general essence of a modern city, which has become the economic capital of the European Community, housing the headquarters of the European Central Bank. The city was almost entirely rebuilt, as it was completely razed to the ground during the Second World War.
The picture shows the Main River in the foreground, with a floating bar-restaurant showing the recreational side of the river that crosses the city. A barge loaded with coal, a symbol of the energy that has fuelled German industry for decades, is lowered down the river, and in the background the city skyline shows a developed, modern city, with a skyscraper in the foreground, the work of the renowned architect Norman Foster.
