Last month, I spent a few days in Rio de Janeiro during a congress, as I mentioned here before, and I fulfilled an old dream of visiting the Selarón Staircase, the famous staircase with super colorful tile mosaics!

Taking advantage of my time in the city, I squeezed in a visit between commitments to see this famous work of art up close. The walk along the small street leading up to the staircase—Rua Manuel Carneiro—is a true spectacle: the walls are filled with art depicting references to Rio and Brazil, transforming the path into an open-air gallery.

When I arrived at the staircase, it was very crowded, as I visited around lunchtime, at about 2 PM if I remember correctly. Many tourists were present, forming a long line to take photos at the iconic part of the stairs that display the name "Escadaria Selarón."

The history of the staircase is as fascinating as the staircase itself. It was conceived and built by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who began decorating it in 1990 as a tribute to the Brazilian people. Selarón used tiles from various parts of the world, creating a very colorful and vibrant mosaic. The work started as a hobby but turned into an obsession. Over several years, he continued to add tiles, which were donated by visitors and brought from different countries, resulting in this marvelous piece of art and becoming a tourist and artistic landmark.

Unfortunately, due to my limited time, I couldn't take a photo exactly at that point, but I did manage to get one a bit further up. At least I have a memory until I return another time and perhaps get the classic photo.

The visit was wonderful, and the staircase is truly stunning. For those in Rio, I highly recommend visiting this place. I've heard that early in the morning, the staircase is less crowded, making it easier to get that coveted iconic photo.

The Selarón Staircase is located in the Santa Teresa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and connects Rua Joaquim Silva in Lapa to Rua Pinto Martins.
