History of Ljubljana Zoo
The Ljubljana Zoo was founded in 1949. The first cages were installed in the center of Ljubljana, but in 1951 it moved to the present area - the southwestern part of Rožnik, where it occupies 19.6 hectares and has 6.5 km of walking trails. Around 260,000 visitors visit us every year. Since 1988, we have been developing as a modern zoo. We arrange for each animal as natural a space as possible, which contains everything that a certain animal needs: a place to sleep, sunbathe, bathe, defecate, observe, hide, and it varies from species to species.
We cultivate native fauna of Slovenia and some non-native representatives of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
In the 19th century, animals were shown in circuses. Many different species were exhibited in cages. They were mainly interested in the systematics and diversity of animal species. In the 20th century, zoos were created that show animals in as natural an environment as possible, the emphasis is on ecology. In the 21st century, centers for nature protection are being created, where they show the ecological interdependence between non-living and living nature and the relationships within species. The protection of nature and the natural environment is important.
