This time while I was in India, my bank Relationship Manager from the bank where I have my account approached me, saying he wanted to discuss with me on some benefits that he would like to share with me on my account. I was not very keen on meeting him, because I had no plans to make any changes in the ways my bank account has been operating. He kept on insisting so finally we arranged for a meeting.
In the meeting he told me that he would like to upgrade my account from being a Classic customer to a Preferred customer. My instant reaction was No, because upgrading the account also means having more minimum balance requirement with the bank. I had no interest in doing that, but then he told me, there was no need for me to maintain the balance since my hubby has a NRI account and there we have maintained some balance, so that was enough and all our accounts would be considered as a group account and minimum balance requirement will be collectively from all accounts. Even then I was not very keen.
So then I asked him, what is the personal benefit for me. So he sent me one flyer, where there were some benefits. The benefits mentioned in the flyer were 50% discount on locker rent, now I do not have a locker with the bank, so this is useless for me. Other is some cashback if I would pay via some of the apps, now I am not the person who uses all these pay apps, so again this was not for me. The other option was a premium credit card. Now I already have a credit card which is lifetime free, If I take this premium card it will not be free for me and I will have to pay yearly charges, so I would be a fool only to shift from a free card to paying card, so again this was not applicable to me, the last benefit was Complimentary airport lounge access, I thought this was one thing which I could use, but then he told me this was discontinued for now. So practically no benefit for me in upgrading my account.
The only benefit that anyone would get is him, by completing a target. He was trying to justify with some other perks like, that I will not have a need to go to the bank for anything, for any assistance the banker will come to my home. I rather did not find that interesting, because first of all in last so many years, I have not visited the bank and now everything is online, so not sure again if this was a benefit for me.
My sister also works in a bank, and she tells me that majority of these schemes are never of value to the customers, they are just a loop for them. Now upgrading the account means we have to keep a good amount of money locked with the bank forever till we have the account with them, which is a benefit for them and not for the account holder.
In the end I told him, that please do not get me in to such loops, I like to keep my things simple and if there is any need I will be happy to walk to the bank and sort it out rather then relying on them to come home to sort it out.
