Birthdays were not usually my thing while growing up because I didn’t stay with my parents when I was a kid. I stayed with my grandma who wasn’t into birthdays. I used to forget my birthdays when I was kid, I remember getting calls from my mum at the end of the day wishing me a happy birthday, I would be like “oh!! So today was my birthday”. My neighbors would laugh at me, telling me I should be ashamed of myself for not knowing my birthday.
My birthday is January 5th and I know it would feel awkward not celebrating my birthday with a cake, so I decided to go for cake window shopping, to know if I will find something I would like. My sister used to be the person that chooses my birthday cake, well she makes her choice, I buy it and we eat it. So in a way it’s her birthday cake, lol, but lately I decided to take the risk to learn these little things about cakes. I have no idea what to choose in a birthday cake, am usually lost, whenever the kind nice lady at the cake shop asks me “what do you want” I usually reply “just give me a cake please”. She laughs and says just choose a flavor and color, am like “it’s just a cake, as long as it’s edible am fine”.
So today I went so early to go order my cake for January 5th, because I was trying to be sure I get my cake delivered on time. I arrived there and I was seeing lots of people who came to collect cakes and place orders but the building was locked so we all converged somewhere while waiting for the building to get opened.
I met a nice lady who had her table set up somewhere outside to collect cake orders. She gave me a big catalog to choose from. While scrolling through the catalog I got tired because “man just wanted cake and nothing else”. She saw the disinterest on my face so she closed the catalog and asked me to give her a description of what I wanted. I just told her to give me a buttered soft cake with less decoration and some chocolate flavor.
You need to see the expression on her face when I told her to put “Happy Birthday To Readthisplease” as the description. She looked at me and was like “why?”, I told her it’s an inside joke between my friends and I. Well she said the bakers will try their best to make the name fit on my cake, fingers crossed.
I wanted to go see some cakes in the display section because I wanted to feed my eyes, I had the feeling of wanting to see cakes. So I went to the display section, but unfortunately I was too early and not lots of cakes were ready for display, so my window shopping wasn’t fully window shopping as I didn’t get the opportunity to see as much cakes as I wanted to see. The nice kind ladies at the display section were kind enough to allow me take pictures of the cake.
Even if I didn’t see, the thought of celebrating my birthday with cake this year makes me grateful for life and everything. Usually on my birthdays I always find a reason to be sad or angry or find a stupid reason not to buy a cake. Am the type that can send a friend money to buy birthday cake on their birthday but won’t buy for myself. I guess things will begin to change as I will be focusing on myself this year and making myself happy.
