New Ford Explorer Blackpool Illuminations Road Trip Part 1

in #cars9 days ago

Not too long ago, Ben and I finally got behind the wheel of the all electric Ford Explorer. You may recognise the name, as there has been an Explorer in the US for quite a while now. As is their wont, Ford have taken the name of an already well established vehicle and re-purposed it (Mustang, anyone? And then there’s the new Capri…)

So even though this electric Explorer has its roots in American design and German engineering, the Explorer is a blend of rugged adventurism and cutting-edge EV technology. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to test it out, so we packed our bags, hit the road, and headed to one of Britain’s most iconic yearly celebration —the Blackpool Illuminations.

Built on Volkswagen’s highly regarded MEB platform (shared with the ID. Buzz and ID.4), the Explorer combines solid EV advancements with Ford’s distinct design language. While it’s assembled in Cologne, Germany, this SUV carries the unmistakable DNA of its American namesake—bold, muscular, and ready for adventure…it’s almost like a baby SUV version the American Explorer! The American one wouldn’t even fit comfortably on the roads over here!

The new Shield design makes a statement all of its own, and as the Explorer is both rugged and modern, and immediately grabs your attention. We had the Premium trim, and it was fitted with optional 21” alloy wheels, and combined with the gloss black accents it gave the appearance of a floating roof - awesome.

The other trim available is the entry level, the Select. It’s chock full of tech and safety, so no worries there, but the best bit about having the Premium trim was the panoramic sunroof, making it the perfect cruising vehicle for going to see the Blackpool Illuminations – and yes, it is referred to as the Northern Las Vegas. We still miss Morecambe Illuminations. Although they came to an end many years ago, it was so nice having that in our local vicinity.

Thanks to its MEB platform, the ride is smooth and stable, even on uneven surfaces, and it’s amazing how the Explorer feels right at home on our – admittedly – bumpy, pothole riddled - roads. Its electric powertrain delivers instant torque, making overtaking effortless, while the balanced suspension ensures comfort for passengers (a thing I am very appreciative of due to the fact that I suffer from frequent and incapacitating migraines)

Now, Ford claims the Explorer EV has a range of up to 300 miles, depending on the configuration, but another thing you have to keep in mind is the temperature. As we are now in the grips of Winter here in the UK, a full charge might be a little different. But get this, we were getting over 300 miles of range at one point! For our trip, this meant we could comfortably make the journey to Blackpool and back with just one charge. Charging is a breeze with rapid DC capabilities—taking the battery from 10% to 80% in about 25 minutes at a rapid charge like InstaVolt, but the best value for keeping the battery charged is a Type 2 home charger.

Ford has cleverly designed the Explorer with families in mind, offering ample legroom in both rows and clever storage solutions throughout. The panoramic sunroof floods the interior with light, creating a welcoming atmosphere for passengers.

The seats—upholstered in premium materials in the Premium trim—are supportive and plush, perfect for long drives. The driver’s seat even includes massage functionality, making it ideal for those extended road trips. And yes, you will hear Ben wax lyrically about this, and the lumbar support, as it really is that comfy!

Our journey to Blackpool proved that the Ford Explorer EV is more than capable of living up to its name. It’s a car built for exploration—whether that’s a long road trip, a family holiday, or simply navigating your daily commute, with thoughtful touches, like multiple USB-C and USB-A ports, we were able to keep both our iPhones charged and ready to film our adventures. Another nifty feature borrowed from the Mustang Mach-E is the hidden, lockable storage box that sits behind the large infotainment screen. It’s such a handy thing to have.

As we cruised through the city streets of Blackpool, surrounded by the glitter and glitz of The Illuminations, the Explorer EV felt like the perfect companion, and it delivered on every front—style, comfort, range, and tech.

As Ford continues its journey into the electric era, the Explorer EV gave us a glimpse of what Ford is looking to offer here in the UK: innovation, practicality, and a spirit of adventure. With a range of trims, excellent value for money, and enough space to satisfy even the busiest families, this electric SUV is - well - we can confirm it’s Blackpool Illuminations-approved.

Thank you all, and enjoy!
Annabelle 😊
