Not too long ago, we were invited over to Manchester to visit the new UK Headquarters for Tesla. Not only did we get chance to spend some time in their new Model 3, we were given a Y for a week on review…hurrah!
The Tesla Model Y is Tesla’s compact crossover SUV that sits between the Model 3 saloon and the larger Model X in terms of size and pricing. Known for blending Tesla’s signature futuristic design and cutting-edge technology with the practicality and versatility of an SUV, the Model Y has captured the attention of families, eco-conscious drivers, and tech enthusiasts alike.
The Tesla Model Y comes in three trims: Rear Wheel Drive, Long Range and Performance. Each trim offers a different balance of range, speed, and features, catering to various driver preferences.
Rear Wheel Drive Trim Range:
This trims range depends on what wheel size you choose – the 19” offers up to 283 miles and the 20” offers up to 267 miles of range
Long Range Trim Range:
The Long Range lives up to its name, offering an EPA-estimated range of up to 331 miles on a full charge, making it one of the best options for long-distance travel. Whether you're commuting or embarking on a road trip, this trim ensures you won’t need to stop often for recharging.
Performance Trim Range:
The Performance trim sacrifices a bit of range for speed, offering up to 319 miles per charge. While that’s slightly less than the Long Range model, it’s still more than enough for most driving scenarios.
This range is achieved thanks to Tesla’s state-of-the-art battery technology and aerodynamic design. The Long Range version in particular is ideal for those who frequently drive long distances or don’t want to worry about recharging often. And with access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, which we've discussed in detail in previous reviews, range anxiety becomes a thing of the past.
Charging times are a critical factor when considering an EV, and Tesla’s charging infrastructure is second to none. The Model Y is compatible with Tesla’s Supercharger network, which provides the fastest charging speeds available. You can add up to 162 miles of range in just 15 minutes using a Supercharger, making long trips far more convenient than with most other electric vehicles.
For home charging, you can install a Tesla Wall Connector, which provides 44 miles of range per hour of charge, fully charging the battery overnight. Alternatively, the Mobile Connector can plug into any standard household outlet, but charging is significantly slower at around 3 miles per hour—this option is better suited for topping off the battery.
Charging Times Breakdown:
• Supercharger: 10-80% charge in around 25-30 minutes.
• Tesla Wall Connector: Full charge overnight (8-12 hours).
• Mobile Connector: 3 miles per hour of charge.
With over 30,000 Supercharger stations globally and Tesla continuously expanding its charging network, finding a charging station when you need one is never an issue.
Tesla is as much a tech company as it is an automaker, and the Model Y reflects this with its cutting-edge technology. The 15-inch touchscreen is the hub of the vehicle’s control system, giving you access to everything from navigation to climate control.
Infotainment System
• Touchscreen: The 15-inch touchscreen is incredibly responsive and intuitive, offering real-time data on energy consumption, maps, and nearby charging stations.
• Entertainment: The Model Y offers in-car gaming, Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify integration, making waiting for a charge at a Supercharger more entertaining.
• Over-the-Air Updates: Tesla’s OTA updates continuously add new features, improvements, and even performance enhancements, meaning your car improves over time without you having to visit a service centre.
One of the Model Y’s standout features is Autopilot, Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance system. Standard on all Model Y trims, Autopilot can automatically steer, accelerate, and brake within its lane, significantly reducing driver workload, especially on highways.
For those looking for more advanced capabilities, Tesla offers Full Self-Driving (FSD), an optional upgrade that includes:
• Navigate on Autopilot: Guides your car from highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including suggesting lane changes and handling interchanges.
• Auto Lane Change: Automatically changes lanes on the motorway.
Options that are coming to the UK (no dates as yet)
• Summon: The car comes to you in a parking lot.
• Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control: Recognizes and responds to traffic lights and stop signs.
While FSD is still in beta and not fully autonomous, it’s clear that Tesla is leading the race toward autonomous driving.
As safety is a top priority at Tesla, the Model Y is of the safest vehicles you can drive. It has received top safety ratings globally, and it’s packed with active and passive safety features, including:
• Automatic Emergency Braking: Detects objects in front of the car and automatically applies the brakes to avoid collisions.
• Collision Warning: Alerts you to potential collisions with vehicles or obstacles.
• Lane Keep Assist: Helps prevent the car from drifting out of its lane by gently steering it back into place.
• OTA (Over The Air) Updates with real-time monitoring and updates that continuously improve safety over the lifetime of the vehicle.
After spending considerable time with the Tesla Model Y, it’s clear why this vehicle has become a top seller in the electric vehicle market. Its combination of range, performance, and technology, along with Tesla’s robust Supercharger network, makes it the perfect all-electric crossover SUV for both families and tech enthusiasts alike. The available trims offer something for everyone—whether you’re looking for a long-distance commuter with ample range or a performance-driven SUV that can thrill on the road.
For those who want to stay ahead of the curve with the latest in EV technology while also benefiting from a comfortable and versatile vehicle, the Tesla Model Y is a fantastic choice.
Thank you all, and enjoy!
