The Linares tournament was one of the strongest annual tournaments before it was cancelled in 2011. In 1991, the event was won by Vassily Ivanchuk by a score of 9.5 and also beating second place Garry Kasparov in the first round.
Incidentally, the game between Ivanchuk and Kasparov won the beauty prize.
