This is our entery into the Cine TV competition to best score or sountrack. There are so many films we could have used for this competition. However none of these films have done so much with 2 notes a semi tone apart.

Film - Jaws

Year - 1975

Director - Steven Spielberg

► About

If you dont know what this film is about then I am not sure where you have been. It is about a killer share and the story is about the effect it has on the community and then the story of how they hunt down and kill it!

► What you loved about it

This is a film I have seen maybe a hundred times and quoted about 1000! Its story is well told and has some classic scenes which are so iconic now that they have helpped to shap horror films since. However this about the score. If you have a piano or something go and play 2 notes next to each other a semi tone apart just once. You will immidiately know what it is and where it is from.

► How it influenced me

John Williams has forever been one of my favourite composers. In my opinionhe is a genius. I would watch a film on the basis that he did the music. This is film is probably the pinacle of what he can do with so little. If you think you need to do lots of notes and phrases in your music then this score proves you wrong. It is so simple, so powerful and so effective.

I love diving and have done quite a lot of shark diving, there is not a time when I have seen sharks in real life when the "dun dun" of jaws has not come into my head. That is how much it has effeced me that it has followed me in my life.

► What part of it did you find most interesting.

As a shark fanatic I loved all the scenes explaining sharks. This scene is one scene explaing the habbits of a great white.

► Any scene that still pops into your mind.

This scne I have quoted so many times. it is a terryfying speach on so many levels. It is delivered brilliant, a real dead pan delivery, like a dolls dead pan delivery....

► Why do you think it's significant and great.

It saddens me to write this but you know a film is powerful when it reults in humans reacting with such fear that they go out and kill millions of sharks as a fearful reaction to the film. It is estimate that over 100 million sharks were killed. This article explains more if you want to go further https://www.ranker.com/list/how-jaws-affected-sharks/laura-allan

It is a sad reaction to a film in many ways and as a member of the Shark Conservation trust this film is a significant point in modern history about the effect films can have on society. I dont think anyone expected this reaction to the film and I think that the music had an effect on how powerful the film is and to peoples reaction to it. I can;t think of any other music where 2 notes have killed 100 million sharks....

Great post, really enjoyable read (although not the last couple of paragraphs), and perfect selection of clips.

I know it makes me sad, the writer of Jaws has since done a lot for shark conservation as he was devestated by the effect.

I saw Jaws in the theater when I was a kid and it's crazy those 2 notes would be so iconic. Even today young people who have never heard of or seen the movie can relate the 2 notes to a shark attack.

I did not see it in the cinema...but do remember going to see the jaws film in 3D......

Just when you think they are sunk, you pull out a classic like Jaws. This theme tune haunted my early childhood years!!! lol Great pick.

he is such a genius composer!

The only movie that bites that
didn’t byte 😄
