How Following 3 Steps Can Change Your Results - Works for me!

3Steps-Today-Flow2.png

In a previous post I spelled out my plans for radically changing 3Steps.Today. The planning and effort is ongoing and fruitfull.

The header image on this post are the 3 Steps. Pretty simple:

  1. Plan
  2. Act
  3. Review

That 3 Step process just sounds too ridiculously easy to be effective. Yet it works.

I use that same method to get stuff done at work. I keep up our runbook and write continuously as a technical lead.

I'm not saying it's the only planning tool I use.

Far from it. I have a lot of tools and processes I use throughout my day. (I borrow from all over.)

Yet those 3 steps are quite powerful when followed. I've worked through that simple method many many times and honed my approach over the years.

Which leads to my next question:

Which step is your favorite?

Step 1 - Plan
Planning is the process of thinking of the steps required to reach a goal. I often write down the steps I think something will take, the cost in time and money, and other factors.

Love to think through problems? Here's some tools from my planning tool list: whiteboards, a notebook, Trello, Miro, spreadsheets, and especially Joplin.

S.M.A.R.T. goals are something that I've used over my career that helps me to plan successfully. There's no one right way to do this. But accomplishing goals requires planning. 😀

Step 2 - Act
It's great to come up with a plan and write stuff down, but if you put no action to your plan, nothing gets accomplished.

Working through the steps to complete a goal can be exciting when you see what you've planned come to life. Taking action on your plan takes effort and discipline. This is also when the plan may change based on unforeseen or unplanned variables. Fun stuff!

Step 3 - Review
I initially labeled this Eval instead of Review, since that's largely what I consider the review process:

considering the results of the plan once acted upon

Real learning occurs when we think and review the results of our plan - what we accomplished or didn't accomplish.

I find it helps to ask myself probing questions like:

  • How can I improve the next time I do something similar?
  • Where was my plan accurate Where was it weak?
  • What would I keep moving forward? What would I ditch? etc.

I've been writing down my review thoughts and questions in preparation for the work I am doing on 3Steps.Today. I find that I love the planning process - thinking about how to get from A to B. It's like problem-solving to me.

I'll leave my own comment below as well. I'm passionate about this subject and want to hear what you've got to say.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on which part of the 3 Steps process (Plan - Act - Review) appeals to you most.

Those are the best ways to achieve your goals and obviously without the first part, the rest will be all up to luck. I should probably plan more during my work day but I just end up focusing more on the things that are more important in priority first and leave the rest to when I get around to it.

I do that when things are dropped on my plate, but because I spend my first 20 minutes of each day at work planning the rest, I try to prevent folks from bogarting my time.

All the steps are necessary to achieve the goals that one pursues, especially planning, which is what saves you the most time, effort and money in anything you do.
The step that I like to do the most is undoubtedly the review, sitting down analyzing the objective achieved or not. See how to improve and analyze errors in order to avoid them.

That's interesting. I find many people like planning more, and most people skip the review process. Rather sad. Glad to see someone who DOES review their efforts.

Planning is easily my favorite but this is because I'm a serial enthusiast. You see, I'm weak in the other 2 areas.

So for me to tackle goals i have a choice to make, i can attempt to change me, which is hard. or i can take advantage of my defects (being a serial enthusiast).

I concentrate on what I'm interested in while I'm interested in it. when i lose interest, I move on. I'll come back eventually and be a bit better than i was before.

This is how a space cadet pursues goals.

:-D

"space cadet" ahahaha. I get it completely. :)

I am not good at planning or review. I just act. If I put to much thought into it I find I do nothing at all. I am happy fo you that the three step process works for you.

Thanks. Yeah it's enjoyable to see a plan come to fruition.

Planning is my favorite but in my opinion, acting is by far the most important one. If you want to achieve something great in life, you definitely need all three so I agree with you.
Big goals are achieved by making a good plan, flawless execution, and an unbiased review.

Unbiased review is the hard part when we are reviewing ourselves. Many people sugarcoat or are too hard on themselves. That would be a great post - how to make performance reviews unbiased.

I could not agree with you more. All three steps are necessary to reach our goals easily.

Believe it or not I love the action part and the reviewing. I like to do things more spontanously but that doesn't always work out as well. Your right that when you have a plan and act on your plan it's sure to give a good review. I often plan things but don't give enough action to have a great review. I do okay with my spotany but I could be better if I acutally follow these three steps all of the time instead of just some of the time. I know this because when I do follow the plan I notice I do better.

Goals are the start of it all and I have my goals so now I need to make the plan and acton it.

Thanks so much. Glad it helped. I am writing and editing a lot of content I have on this. :) I hope to post more continuing forward.

My goal is pretty simple, buils up some passive income on Hive while I enjoy taking part in its social media aspect. Planning is for sure my favorite part, sometimes I even have to remind myself to actually act on my plans.

I'm not a planning person myself, but I recognize the paramount importance to plan when you set your own future goals. That is, of course, if you want to grow and advance in whatever you want to undertake. Very nice post! Thank you very for sharing it!

You are most welcome, and thanks for the comment. I don't plan everything, but this process has so helped me when I use it. 😀

I enjoy research, so I guess I would have to say that Plan is my favorite part. Sometimes the hard part of Plan, though, is turning the research into goals. There is a difference between a dream and a goal. A dream is something you want to realize/accomplish. When you add a deadline, it becomes a goal. For me, I don't tend to focus as much on the Review part. I set my goal, I put together a plan on how to reach the goal, and then I put my head down and start doing without considering that I might benefit from tweeking what I'm doing. Part of my problem is that I don't track my progress as often as I should. Without that data, I cannot evaluate whether a change might be in order. Thanks for helping me put this back into perspective.

goals Are important things in a persons life. Looks like with these 3 steps certain goals can be reach easier. Thanks for sharing and the invite via email 😎

Thanks and glad to see you came here from ListNerds. I have been using that with emphasis recently and it's working (obviously).

You are welcome.
Great to hear, maybe I should write an email soon to get more people over to my blogs.

Thanks for the tip, much appreciated 😊

Yes please! I think you will find plenty of people on the newly launched ListNerds who are eager to click emails and read. :) Good luck with ListNerds and your 3 Steps.

Thank you @threesteps. Will have a try and see what happens 😊

If I have to choose, I think I have the most with the thinking part of the planning. But as far as the acting goes, I still have a lot of trouble with that. Usually, I can see what I need to do to get there where I want to be, but still, I have a very hard time acting accordingly. However, you are absolutely right. These 3 steps are all you ever need to change and get the results you want.

I had a problem for a while being a constant planner. I would document and plan everything, but wouldn't act on it all.

I changed to trying to plan less and put more effort into existing plans. Right now what I am doing works. Thrilled.

For me....If I had to pick one...

It's act!

Nothing will help me reach my goals if I don't actually put things into practice. Planning and reviewing are critical for sure, but if I don't kick my own butt and act on what I need to...

Welp.

Great advice. Otherwise it's just a printed out pdf that's laminated. :)

The three steps are simple to understand. It gets complex when we are trying to solve everything alone. Plan act and review calmly. If you face too much difficulty find help along your journey.

Only thing I lack to achieve my Goals is Discipline. I think first I have to learn that

I know for a fact these three steps work. I personally love all three parts as there is no success without the other 2 lol, but if I have to choose, the planning is my favourite part. To be honest, I plan everything nowadays and yes plans can change if needed, but this is to give myself some guidance and to get started on what I want to achieve. My boyfriend often finds me nuts though, he hates that I plan out everything before leaving the home when we have somewhere new to go or a tight schedule. I see it differently: because of my planning, I will be prepared if something goes different as planned, and we will use our time efficiently. But he's just not the planner :) lol It's fine though, we complement each other.

I don't plan things down to the minute, but I definitely set daily goals, assess how much time I can commit to my projects at work, and then track it all. Over the years I have become quite adept at knowing how long it's going to take me to do something since I use the pomodoro method and have for years.

Haha, I am back at your content today. Maybe because what I am looking for in my inbox is a way to learn and engage in ways that help me create some order in the cryptochaos. I had more clearly defined goals when I started playing around with crypto about 1 year ago. Goals for investing are critical of course, but at the time, I really just wanted to have fun with this wild new asset class and ideally have a more internationally portable bit of fun money. Now, I have seen the potential and watched so many people rocket their account value, yet I have missed out for the most part every time. So my 2022 goal is to get real, get serious, and stop missing out. I have been big on the Act, and less big on the Plan. So thanks for your tips on turning thoguhts into successful goals!
