Replacing Broken Boot Laces With Paracord

One of my boot laces broke, so I decided to spruce up the boots with a new set of more colorful laces.

In my storage, I have some boxes of materials for repairs. Among the items, I’ve accumulated a lot of strong paracord 550. Yes, possibly a bit of a prepper stereotype, but having access to strong rope is very good. It super useful both for quick temporary repairs, and also for diy and crafts projects. If you’re interested in knots, you can for example make amazing bracelets out of Paracord.

It can hold a lot of weight, it’s resistant to wear and tear, and available in a lot of colors.

My particular choice is Paracord 550 in the color lime green (roughly) with reflective thread woven into the Paracord. This matches (roughly) the lime green details of the boots, and work great in the pitch black autumn and winter of my country.

Required Items

  • Lighter
  • Knife or scissors
  • Paracord
  • Small piece of scrap metal

Cut the Paracord to the correct length to fit your boots or shoes.

Use the lighter to burn the ends of the paracord. It will melt. This makes sure that the cord won’t unravel. Use any kind of small piece of scrap metal to slightly shape to molten ends. I used a leftover tea candle aluminum holder.

Hopefully this goes without saying, but do not touch the molten ends of the paracord. Paracord is made of nylon, and having molten plastic stuck to your skin is not something I recommend.

Lace up the boots with your new shoes laces, use any lacing pattern that you like.

Once the boots are laced up, I recommend tying some nice end knot at the ends. This is not necessary, but this hides the molten ends and makes your new shoes laces more unique.

Searching around the internet for “paracord end knots” will give many great tutorials on exactly how to do very beautiful knots. I chose a very simple knot myself, but paracord art and knots is a whole world of cool crafts ideas in itself.

This was a very small, very simple project, and I’m happy with the results.

Until next time!
