Project Overview:

This innovative circular economy initiative transforms agricultural waste into high-value protein through an integrated system of waste management and protein production, addressing both environmental challenges and food security needs in Colombia. The project creates a sustainable cycle connecting slaughterhouse operations, black soldier fly (BSF) larvae production, and local animal feed manufacturing.

Climate-Smart Solution:

  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural waste
  • Converts organic waste into protein-rich BSF larvae
  • Produces local, sustainable animal feed
  • Decreases transportation emissions from imported feed
  • Strengthens local agricultural resilience

Circular Economy Components:

  1. Slaughterhouse Facility
    • Meets local administrative requirements
    • Creates formal employment opportunities
    • Provides controlled waste management
    • Ensures food safety standards

  2. BSF Larvae Production
    • Processes organic waste into protein
    • Uses proven biotechnology
    • Requires minimal water and energy
    • Produces organic fertilizer as by-product

  3. Animal Feed Manufacturing
    • Incorporates locally sourced ingredients (BSF, bentonite)
    • Reduces feed costs by 20-30%
    • Creates value-added products
    • Supports small-scale farmers

Market Opportunity:

  • Growing demand for protein feed
  • Current high dependency on imports
  • Strong support from local government
  • Existing network of small-scale farmers
  • Expanding livestock sector

Social Impact:

  • Empowers small-scale farmers through affordable feed
  • Creates local employment opportunities
  • Improves food security
  • Strengthens rural economy
  • Promotes sustainable farming practices

Partnership Structure:

  • Early-stage climate business: BSF technology company, Ecobank Development Colombia
  • Administrative Partner: Quinta Esencia Taller
  • Supporting Partners: Local government, farmer cooperatives

Financial Sustainability:

  • Multiple revenue streams (slaughterhouse services, BSF products, animal feed)
  • Reduced operational costs through waste-to-value model
  • Clear path to commercial viability
  • Strong potential for replication in other regions

Investment Requirements:

  • Within P4G funding range ($350,000 average)
  • 30% cost share secured
  • Clear scale-up strategy
  • Demonstrated market demand

This project aligns with P4G's objectives by addressing climate change through innovative waste management while creating sustainable economic opportunities in the agricultural sector. The circular model ensures long-term viability while supporting rural development and environmental protection.

Sounds really cool! I did some processing of food waste from groceries into bsfl for local chicken feed when I lived in NC, everyone involved loved what they got from the effort.

Oh thats good to hear! This specific piece will come from the experience of another local company with two successful pilot projects completed.

I personally have only seen it on youtube.
