It was very different from what I expected. It wasn't a bad read by any means, but it was very hard to get through because it was pretty slow at times. i thought it would have a way bigger true crime aspect which i was really hoping for but it didn't. i wasn't prepared for it to be so focused on japanese society and i didn't really enjoy those aspects. personally I'm just not interested in books with a heavy focus on society criticism. i also didn't expect it to be that toxic in terms of misogyny and fatshaming, it was pretty extreme and I'm glad i'm doing better with that stuff, but it could be triggering at times. I couldn't really relate to any of the characters (and that's okay!), but i really enjoyed seeing everyone's progression throughout the story. rika became a lot bolder and more cunning which is a good thing. reiko realized she didn't need to fit the picture of the japanese housewife and honestly, good for her too. i had very mixed feelings about kajii throughout the story. i like the conclusion that rika came to that it doesn't matter if she killed these men with her own hands or not because this is what she does. there were definitely parts where it felt like rika was slowly but surely turning into kajii and i'm lowkey glad that didn't happen. I really enjoyed the parts where the gang came together at shinoi's or rika's, it felt very wholesome and almost like a chosen family. i quite enjoyed the ending too and i hope rika got some closure from it all. it's hard to rate it because it took me forever to get through and it was very different from my expectations, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it also wasn't super great. I'd give it 3/5 i think.
