Fine dining in a frontier town

in #foodlast year

We do like to treat ourselves on holiday. The small town of Tadoussac has a selection of restaurants and cafes. We checked out a few menus and liked the look of the one at Chez Mathilde. There was not a lot of choice, but they had five course tasting menus with a choice of meat, seafood or veggie.

Chez Mathilde

It is not a huge place and not at all formal. We had booked,b so they had a table for us. A piano and double bass duo were playing jazz tunes. We both went for the veggie meal. You could have a different wine with each course, but we just had a bottle of local white.

First course

The servers were very good and described each course as they brought it out. They even lined up the plates in a specific way. We started with a cashew terrine with a filo crust and green onion sauce. I will not remember all the details, but it was all good.

Second course

Next was a cauliflower risotto with what they described as a bee pollen sauce with hazelnuts. That was beautifully sweet.

Third course

Then we had beetroot in a creamy sauce. I do not know how they prepared it, but I had not had beetroot like this before. It just fell apart at the touch of the fork. The sauce was great.

Fourth course

My favourite was this lion's mane mushroom in a mushroom sauce with cranberries.

Dessert

Dessert was an apple sorbet with apple sauce and popcorn that ended the meal nicely. They paced it nicely without rushing us. I think they expected us to be there all night

There was a couple from Montreal on the next table and we chatted with them. They had been before and said it was the best restaurant in town. Of course this was not cheap, but you could probably pay more in a big city.

Pur next day was nice with a walk around the bay in lovely weather. We went in the marine mammal centre where they have a cool collection of skeletons.

Sperm whale

Lunch was at the fast food hut operated by the restaurant. I had their fish and chips. That was nice too.

Fine dining; give me beans and chips any day.. 😃

I like beans and chips too, but life is about experiences. We don't eat like this very often, but food can be special.

@bingbabe is into all this, it's not for me. Each to our own.

Some mad people like climbing fences. Takes all kinds.

Lol.., touche!

The place looks good and I love the fact that Pianos and jazz were played there
It will make the environment calm

Everything look so cool but to me the portions looks too thin 🤣🤣🤣

It is not so much about filling you up, but it was enough.

It's good that you have gone to a beautiful place during your holidays, it relaxes one's mind and the food is so much tasty.

I've never been to a place like this, but I always feel like I would leave hungry when I see the photos. Don't get me wrong, I know the US has huge portions and I also usually don't finish my meals when we eat out, but these just look tiny!

It added up, but we were not over-full. Quality can matter more than quantity.

Yes, I guess so!

It's so good to see decent vegetarian food Steve. It looks like they really worked hard to make something taste and look amazing. So often when I go to a restaurant I'm faced with cheesy pasta, cheesy mushrooms or cheesy vegetable lasagne. Anyone would think vegetarians only eat cheese.

It was impressive and better than you might expect in a small town. I don't know that it was vegan though. They did a veggie hot dog from their kiosk during the day. In the cities there is more choice. Montreal is very multicultural. We were in the Italian quarter today. In the old town we found a place with a few veggie options, so checking that out tonight.

!PIZZA

This looks like it was a fun experience. We don't dine at these kinds of restaurants often but I've enjoyed it when we have. It's amazing what a creative chef can do with simple ingredients.

I forgot to mention that some people were sat right by the kitchen so they could see the magic happen. I think anyone could enjoy the food.

Nice! We tried a new restaurant like this in our hometown for my birthday and sat at a table near the open kitchen. It was a lot of fun to watch them prepare the meals. Some people are put off by the smaller portions, I think, but when you have wave after wave of small dishes you usually walk away satisfied.

Exactly. I had a couple of comments about that, but we felt it was enough.

That meal looks amazing! Often with so few ingredients too. The cauliflower dish sounds most interesting as it sounds half way between savoury and desert.

It's all very clever and enjoyable. Interesting to try these things.

Noche de copas excelente 😉😁.
